Le Moyne stops Greyhound women's basketball, 78-71, in Northeast-10 Conference action

Le Moyne 78, Assumption 71

SYRACUSE, NY --- Junior guard COURTNEY CORYEA (Mooers Forks, NY/Northeast Clinton) scored a team-high 23 points as Le Moyne College defeated previously undefeated Assumption College, 78-71, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball SUNDAY at Ted Grant Court.

The Greyhounds (5-1, 3-1) entered the game ranked No. 24 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches' Poll. Le Moyne is now 4-2 and 2-2.

Senior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) led the Greyhounds with 23 points, while sophomore forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) (14 points, 7 rebounds), senior guard/captain TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) (12 points, 4 assists) and freshman forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) (11 points) played well in support roles.

Coryea finished with nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks to go along with her 23 points. Senior guard KATIE DUNN (Whippany, NJ/Morris Catholic) and senior forward VANESSA HOLDEN (Suffern, NY/Immaculate Heart, NJ) each had 14 points and junior guard DENISE SCOTT (Yonkers, NY/Lincoln) chipped in with 12 points off-the-bench for Le Moyne.

Le Moyne made eight-of-13 three-point attempts (.615) as a major factor in posting the win.

After falling behind 3-0 in the game's first minute, Le Moyne rattled off a 12-point run sparked by a three-pointer by postgraduate guard JACQUELIN PRECIOUS (Fonthill, ONT/Governor Simcoe). The Dolphins pushed their largest lead of the half to 10 points on a three-pointer by Scott with 13:17 left, but the Greyhounds rallied to tie the score with a 10-point spurt of their own.

Griffiths hit a three-pointer and Meredith followed with a conventional three-point play. Plasski then hit a pair of free throws and freshman guard BRITTANY COHEN (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) made a layin to tie it at 19-19.

The lead changed hands nine times over the final ten minutes of the first half but Le Moyne entered the halftime break with a two-point edge, 38 36, as Holden made a lane jumper with 1:57 left.

The game was finally tied at 65-65 as Plasski made a long three-pointer --she scored 19 points in the second half. LeMoyne then ran a 7-0 spurt to take final command, 72-65 with 2:20 left.

The Greyhounds are next in action WEDNESDAY when they host the College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. in the Laska Gym.
