Bridgeport stops Greyhounds, 58-54, in non-conference women's basketball

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior guard SIDNEY PARSONS (Chandler, AZ) scored 17 points to lead four double-figure scorers as the University of Bridgeport defeated Assumption College, 58-54, in a women's basketball non-conference game MONDAY night in the Laska Gym.

Sophomore forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) led the Greyhounds with 16 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) added 10 points.

The Greyhounds moved to a 32-28 first-half advantage as Parker made a pair of inside moves in the final minute to break a 28-28 deadlock.

They started the second half with a 5-0 run to move to nine-point lead, 37-28. Junior guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) opened with a nifty move to the basket, Parker made one of two free throws and Lupien finished a fastbreak off a turnover.

After Parsons scored inside on a feed from sophomore guard JULIA BUSALT (Viernheim, Germany) before Griffiths drilled a three-pointer for a 10-point lead, the Greyhounds largest lead, at 40-30 with 17:34 left.

With the Greyhounds leading 45-38, Bridgeport went on a 16-0 run to move to a nine-point advantage, 54-45, with 7:46 left. Then it was Assumption's turn to run a 9-0 spurt to tie the game, 54-54, with 2:47 remaining.

Griffiths started the run with a pair of fre throws, Parker made two more before converting a senior guard/captain TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) feed inside. Two more free throws by Griffiths and a one by junior guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) tied the game.

Bridgeport's freshman forward JULIA COLLEY (Harlow, England) made two free throws with 1:31 left and Parsons added two more with one second left to account for the final score.

The Greyhounds are now 10-8 overall and host Saint Michael's College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Bridgeport is now 4-12.
