Molly Griffiths, Bethany Plasski lead Greyhounds women's basketball past Saint Anselm, 59-49, in NE-10 action

MANCHESTER, NH --- Sophomore forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) had a double-double 19 points, 12 rebounds and senior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) chipped in with 17 points and four steals (including the 200th in her career) as Assumption College defeated Saint Anselm College, 59-49, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action SATURDAY in the Stoutenburg Gymnasium.
The victory for the Greyhounds improved their overall record to 12-9 and 10-6 in the conference to move into fourth place. In other key action affecting the Greyhounds in the standings Merrimack (7-13, 6-9) defeated Bentley (13-9, 9-6), 70-68 and Saint Rose (13-7, 8-7) defeated Pace (12-7, 9-6), 68-52.
The Greyhounds moved to a 25-24 lead at the half as Griffiths hit a lane jumper with 1:00 left and Plasski a layup with six seconds left to move from a three-point deficit to the lead.
The Hounds moved it to a 10-point game, 42-32, early in the second half outscoring the Hawks 17-8 over the first 9:45.
Junior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) scored on an inside move on a feed from Griffiths to open the half and senior guard TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) (10 points) made a free throw before the Hawks senior guard JUSTINE LYONS (Reading, MA/Reading) (24 points) and freshman forward MEGAN HOWARD (St. Paul, MN/Central) drilled corner three pointers to give Saint Anselm a one-point lead, 29-28, with 17;26 left.
Junior guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) then made layup, Plasski a jumper followed by a long three-pointer to make it 37-29.
Saint Anselm's freshman guard KATIE DOREY (Burlington, VT/Rice Memorial) then made a three-pointer from the top-of-the-circle before Gardner and Plasski made back-to-back hoops and freshman forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) made a free throw to complete the mini-spurt.
Saint Anselm then went on a 13-7 run to cut the gap to 49-45 with just 2:30 left in the game. The Greyhounds however made seven of eight free throws down-the-stretch to seal the win.
