WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) scored 17 points, while junior guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) and freshman forward KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA/Franklin) added 15 apiece to lead Assumption College past American International College, 67-53, in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball game THURSDAY night in the Laska Gym.
The Greyhounds' defense proved to be the major factor as American International was limited to a 15-for-53 floor accuracy performance (.283) and made just five-of-24 three-point attempts (.208). Assumption is now 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference, just 1/2 game out of second place.
Junior forward STACY BOISVERT led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points making 12-of-14 attempts at the free throw line. American International College is now 10-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Plasski scored 10 points in the first half as the Greyhounds moved to a 28-21 advantage.
After junior guard JEANETTE JOHNATHAN (Central Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) made a wing three-pointer for the Yellow Jackets to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 18-16 with 5:16 remaining in the period, the Hounds outscored the Jackets, 10-5, for the seven-point lead at the break.
Junior forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) converted a layup on a feed from junior guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) and then American International's KRISTIN BOESENBERG (Pocono Pines, PA/Pocono Mountain West) made a three-pointer. Cook then made a layin off a nice feed from senior guard/captain TRISH GARDNER (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth), Plasski followed with a lane jumper and sophomore guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) hit a three-pointer.
Freshman guard RHEA PASCAL (Pickering, ONT/Notre Dame) then hit a layin for the Yellow Jackets and Meredith finished the first half scoring with a free throw to account for the seven-point lead.
Boisvert put the Yellow Jackets in front, 33-32, with a pair of free throws with 15:58 remaining. However the Greyhounds outscored the Jackets 17-3 to move to a 49-36 lead with 8:47 left.
Meredith started the mini-spurt with a three-pointer from the right wing and then made a conventional three-point play. Lupien then scored nine straight points on a variety of inside moves before Meredith made two more free throws to make it a 13-point game.
The Greyhounds are at the University of New Haven WEDNESDAY at 5:30 p.m. in another Northeast-10 Conference game.
