Greyhounds drop two at UMass Lowell volleyball tri-meet

LOWELL, Mass. --- A tough day for the Assumption College women's volleyball team as they droped two matches in a tri-meet at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Costello Gym Saturday.

In the opener, the host River Hawks defeated the Greyhounds, 3-0, as sophomore outside hitter SARAH COSCIA (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield) finished with nine kills, junior setter NICHOLE RONDEAU (Dracut, MA/Dracut) had 23 set assists.

The Greyhounds were paced statistically by junior outside hitter JESSICA HALLER (Meriden, CT/Maloney) with 14 digs, while junior outside hitter COURTNEY STRATTON (Hudson, NH/Alvirne) ended with eight kills.

UMass Lowell won 25-11, 25-17 and 25-20 to improved its overall record to 14-14 and 6-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

In the second match, the University of Bridgeport improved to 21-11 overall as the Purple Knights prevailed 3-1. Bridgeport won 25-16, 25-11, 21-25 and 25-2 in four games.

Junior outside hitter OLGA SIDOROVA (Ekaterinburg, Russia/Dickinson) had 14 kills and senior middle hitter EMMA ARIYO (Kampala, Uganda/Makerere) added 10 to lead the offense, while junior setter MILICA MICOVIC (Belgrade, Serbia/Anchorage) was the perfect catalyst with 33 assists.

Sophomore setter MARILISA STRAND (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) was the standout for the Greyhounds with five kills, 11 assists and 12 digs.

The Greyhounds are now 3-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference. They played their final regular-season match Monday in the Laska Gym hosting Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill College at 7 p.m. The team will honor its seniors before the match.
