Hounds sweep SCSU in Northeast-10 Conference softball

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman designated hitter CAITLIN CLARY (Belmont, NH/Belmont) stroked a one-out RBI single in the eighth inning as Assumption College defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 7-6, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader TUESDAY at Marois Field.

In the second game freshman CASEY HALAJIAN (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams) pitched a three-hitter for her first career shutout as the Greyhounds completed the sweep, 1-0.

In the opener the Greyhounds stormed to a 6-0 advantage only to have the Owls come back in the seventh inning with an improbable six-run rally capped by a game-tying grand slam by freshman outfielder ALYSSA PAGANO (Monroe, CT/Masuk).

Sophomore first baseman AMY GORDON (Seekonk, MA/Bishop Feehan) singled across a run in the fifth inning and the Hounds scored five more in the sixth. Sophomore outfielder MARY HANCOCK (Gardner, MA/Gardner) and Gordon worked RBI walks, sophomore third baseman ASHLEY BILODEAU (Manchester, CT/East Catholic) picked up an RBI on a hitbatsman and Clary singled across a run in the rally.

Sophomore shortstop MARISSA PALUMBO (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) led the 11-hit attack with three hits, while Clark and junior outfielder MEGHAN DIVITTO (Milford, MA/Milford) each had two hits. For the Owls, junior outfielder JULIANNE FLOOD (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and sophomore second baseman ROBIN PRIEST (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) each had two hits in their eight-hit attack.

The second game featured the defensive work of Bilodeau at third base as she ended with nine assists while Halajian improved her record to 3-5 using just 83 pitches.

The Greyhounds, now 14-16 overall and 8-6 in the conference, will play at Saint Anselm THURSDAY in another conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. Southern Connecticut is now 21-9 overall and 10-6 in the conference.
