Softball rallies to earn split with Bentley in NE-10 doubleheader

WALTHAM, Mass. --- Junior outfielder MARY HANCOCK (Gardner, MA/Gardner) and sophomore outfielder BERNADETTE FUENTES (Hickville, NY/Holy Trinity) each hit two-run doubles in the seventh inning as Assumption College came-from-behind to defeat Bentley University, 8-7, in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader here TUESDAY.

In the opener, the Falcons' freshman righthander TARA FOGARTY (Chester, NY/John Fogarty) pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out six as Bentley prevailed 6-0.

Hancock led the Greyhounds' 14-hit second-game attack with three hits and three RBI, while Fuentes had two hits and four RBI. Sophomore first baseman AMY GORDON (Seekonk, M/Bishop Feehan) and junior centerfielder MEGHAN DIVITTO (Milford, MA/Milford) each had two hits.

Hancock doubled across the first run in a three-run second inning and Fuentes finished with a two-run single. The Falcons got two back in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run single by sophomore CHRISTINE D'AMICO (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury). They tied the game at 3-3 on a freshman MEGAN BLIER (Wells, ME/Wells) RBI double. Senior outfielder DINA FERRIERO (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) doubled across a pair in a three-run sixth as the Falcons built the 6-4 advantage.

Assumption is now 9-11 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Bentley is 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Greyhounds host Merrimack College in another Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader WEDNESDAY at Marois Field at 3:30 p.m.
