MANCHESTER, NH --- Junior forward PAULSON EDUM (Calabar, Nigeria) scored the game's lone goal and senior goalkeeper SEAN LAMBERT (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) posted the shutout as Southern New Hampshire University defeated Assumption College, 1-0, in the Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer quarterfinal round here today at Larkin Field.
The loss ended the Greyhounds season at 6-7-5 overall after qualifying for the conference playoffs for the fourth time in their history and the first time since 2001. The Hounds defeated Saint Anselm College (3-2) Tuesday to clinch seventh-place and a spot in the postseason tournament.
Edum's eighth goal of the season came on a feed from junior forward ADRIAN SCHIPPERS (Ashby, MA/Oakmont) at 57:40. The goal was the fifth game-winner, the conference leader, for Edum this season.
Southern New Hampshire, now 14-2-3 overall, has allowed just seven goals all season with an amazing 13 shutouts. The Penmen shutout the Greyhounds 3-0 on October 8. The team was ranked fifth in last week's NSCAA/adidas national poll.
Southern New Hampshire will move on to the Northeast-10 Conference semifinal round and a home contest against the winner of Sunday night's game between No. 6 Southern Connecticut (6-6-5, 5-3-5) and No. 3 Franklin Pierce (11-7-1, 9-3-1).
Lambert, the Northeast-10 Conference Goalie-of-the-Year did not make a save in goal to post the shutout. Southern New Hampshire outshot the Greyhounds 11-6 (5-0 on net).
Greyhounds' sophomore goalkeeper BRANDON SULLIVAN (Halesite, NY/Saint Dominic) made four saves.
