Assumption 3, Concordia 2
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore midfielder PATRICK LINDBERG (Holliston, MA/Holliston) scored in the 84th minute as Assumption College defeated Concordia, NY, 3-2, in a non-conference soccer game FRIDAY night at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
The fourth straight win for the Greyhounds improved their record to 4-1-1 and tied the team record for consecutive wins set in 2001. Concordia is now 4-4.
The Greyhounds played the ball upfield as junior midfielder DOUG STARBIRD (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) soloed toward the Clippers' net. After a misplay by the Concordia defense, Lindberg finished a wild scramble in front of the net at 83:10.
Concordia took a 1-0 lead as freshman midfielder DANIEL ESPINOZA (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) headed an errrant defensive clear past Hounds sophomore goalie BRANDON SULLIVAN (Halesite, NY/Saint Dominic) just 10:42 into the first half. Sullivan made just one save in preserving the win.
The Hounds would come back to tie it at 1-1 as sophomore forward STEPHEN BLAISDELL (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick), who had won the previous two games with late goals, dribbled to the right side of the goal and kicked back to the far post. He leads the Greyhounds with four goals, one assist for nine points.
Concordia would take the lead again as senior forward STEFAN DIMITROV (Sofia, Bulgaria/Veliko Tarnova) scored on a direct kick off the left post and eventually ricocheted into the net for a 2-1 advantage at 41:53.
The Greyhounds tied the game at 2-2 as junior midfielder MARTIN MELENDEZ-COOPER (Waterford, CT/Waterford) scored his fist goal of the season three minutes later finishing off a scramble in front of Concordia freshman goalkeeper ANDREW MC CARTHY (Northport, NY/Northport).
Lindberg's game-winner, proved to be the only goal of the second half.
Assumption outshot the Clippers, 7-6, and the teams had just one cornerkick each.
The Greyhounds are now on a three-game road trip playing at Caldwell, NJ (Sunday at 2 p.m.) and then two important Northeast-10 Conference games at Saint Rose (Tuesday at 4 p.m.) and at New Haven (next Saturday at 1 p.m.)
