Violandi leads Hound lacrosse past Dominican, 12-11

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore attack NICHOLAS VIOLANDI (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) scored four goals to lead Assumption College past non-conference rival Dominican, NY College, 12 11, in men's lacrosse in the Multi-Sport Stadium WEDNESDAY night. Violandi now had 19 goals on the season.
The Greyhounds saluted their seniors before the game. Long stick midfielder KYLE CHAFFEE (Stratford, CT/Saint Joseph's), long stick midfielder MATT CLIFFORD (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken), defender MIKE SJOGREN (Leicester, MA/Saint John's), attack KEVIN JURGENS (Needham, MA/Needham) and defender JORDAN RUGGERI (Milford, CT/Saint Joseph's) were all presented medalions as their home careers came to a close.
The Greyhounds despite a wide statistical advantage . . . they outshot the Chargers (54-24), owned a 49-34 advantage in grounds balls and won 21 of 27 faceoffs . . . had to come-from-behind to win.
After Violandi and Jurgens gave the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead in the first period, Dominican scored the next four goals as first freshman attack KORIN PIERCE (Middleburg, VA/St. John's Catholic Prep) and then senior attack JEREMY ARCARO (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) scored back-to-back goals.
Murphy stopped the streak with a goal for the Greyhounds off a ground ball and assist by freshman midfielder CHRIS NOYES (Tewksbury, MA/Central Catholic) (13 ground balls, 21-of-27 faceoffs) before sophomore midfielder TYLER DOUGLAS (St. Albert, AB/Bellerose) and freshman midfielder GABE SUTHERLAND (Saskatoon, SK/Feehan Catholic) made it 6-3 Dominican with 8:57 left in the half.
The Greyhounds then outscored the Chargers 3-1 over the final 7:12 . . . one goal by freshman attack WILL LANGEVIN (goal No. 15) (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) and two more by Violandi to tie the game at 7-7 at halftime.
After Dominican's Douglas scored on a man-up situation to make it 8 7, the Hounds got goals from freshman midfielder JOHN MITCHELL (goal No. 5) (Southington, CT/Southington), sophomore attack JOHN MURPHY (goal No. 18) (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and freshman attack TIM ROY (goal No. 10) (Avon, CT/Avon) to move in front 10-8 with 11:32 left in the game.
Junior attack KEVIN KLASKIN (Norfolk, MA/Xaverian) (goal No. 21) and freshmaan midfielder TOM GUIDO (goal No. 6) (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) closed out the scoring for the Hounds. Klaskin now has 46 goals, 56 assists for 102 points in his career.
Junior goalkeeper DAN SHEA (Wrentham, MA/King Philip) made eight saves for the Greyhounds, while sophomore BRENDAN BONACUM (Port Jefferson, NY/Port Jefferson) made 20 saves for Dominican.
The Greyhounds are now 7-7 overall and play their season finale at Saint Michael's College SATURDAY. The winner of that game gets the final spot in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament. Dominican is now 2-10.
