Southern New Hampshire stops Greyhound men's basketball in Northeast-10 Conference action

MANCHESTER, NH --- Freshman guard MARCUS MATTHEWS (Valley Stream, NY/Maine Central) scored a game-high 21 points leading four double-figure scorers as Southern New Hampshire University ran past Assumption College, 80-53, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action SATURDAY at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
The loss dropped the Greyhounds to 17-9 overall and 14-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Southern New Hampshire improves to 15 11 and 11-10.
The Hounds are now in fifth-place in the standings one game behind Stonehill and Merrimack (both tied at 15-6). With one game remaining against conference regular-season champion Bentley University TUESDAY at the Laska Gym at 7:30 p.m., the Greyhounds can finish no lower than fifth however could catch Stonehill College for fourth-place should they beat Bentley and the Skyhawks lose their finale at American International, also Tuesday evening.
The top four teams draw a first-round bye in the upcoming conference playoffs, while fifth-place through eighth-place host ninth through 12th in first-round games on March 2.
Sophomore guard/forward DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) was the lone double-figure scorer for the Greyhounds with 10 points and five rebounds.
Junior guard/forward STEPHEN WOOD (South Jamaica Queens, NY) (14 points, four steals), freshman guard LUCAS CROTEAU (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) (13 points) and sophomore guard/forward TORY STAPLETON (Rahway, NJ/St. Thomas More) (10 points, nine rebounds) played well in support roles for the Penmen.
The Penmen sped to a 38-29 halftime advantage and then outscored the Greyhounds 42-24 in the second half as the visitors made just seven of 28 attempts (.250) from the floor.
