Savoy Fraine, Greg Twomey lead balanced attack as men's basketball stops Southern New Hampshire, 82-75, in NE-10 action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Postgraduate forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) (8 rebounds, 6 assists) and sophomore center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Grenada Hills) (2 blocked shots) each scored 14 points to lead a balanced offense (six double-figure scorers) as Assumption College defeated Southern New Hampshire, 82-75, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action SATURDAY in the Laska Gym.

The victory improved the Greyhounds overall record to 11-5 and 9-3 in the conference. They are now one-half game behind Stonehill (9-2) and Merrimack (9-2) in second place tied with UMass Lowell (9-3). Southern New Hampshire is now 8-8 overall and 4-7 in the conference.

Also in double-figures for the Greyhounds were freshman KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) (13 points), junior guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Fort Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotta) (11 points, 4 steals, 2 blocked shots), sophomore forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) (10 points) and senior guard/captain MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Christian) (10 points).

Sophomore swingman TORY STAPLETON (Rahway, NJ/Saint Thomas More) (19 points, 8 rebounds) and freshman guard JOSH MORGAN-GREEN (Upper Marlboro, MD/Saint Mary's) (15 points including five first-half treys) led the Penmen. Senior center TROY BOWEN (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) (11 points) and freshman guard MARCUS MATTHEWS (Valley Stream, NY/Maine Central Institute) (11 points) played well in support roles for S.N.H.U.

The Penmen moved to a 23-10 first-half lead behinf Morgan-Green shooting bonanza making five three-pointers.

It was 8-0 as Brown converted an inside move and Morgan-Green made two threes before Bluford broke the spell with a layup on a fastbreak feed from Twomey. Morgan-Green then hit another three-pointer before Bluford converted inside. Another three-pointer by MorganGreen and a layup by Bowen made it 16-4 with 16:31 left.

A jumper by Fraine followed by a dunk cut the gap to 16-8 before Matthews made two free throws. A layup by Donahue followed for the Greyhounds before Morgan-Green hit his fifth straight three-pointer and junior swing STEPHEN WOOD (South Jamaica Queens, NY/Msgr. Clancy) hit a lane jumper to make it 23-10.

A dunk by Fraine with 5:41 left on a feed from Twomey (game-high six assists) cut the gap to one point, 31-30, before the Penman went on a 7-0 run to finish the first half and a 38-30 lead.

Stapleton hit a pair of free throws with 11:02 left in the game to make it 54-47 however a 10-0 spurt by the Greyhounds capped by a Donahue long-range three-pointer put Assumption in front, 57-54, with 8:53 left.

Baldarelli made a free throw and followed a wing three-pointer before Bajema tied the game at 54-54 with a corner three-pointer with 9:29 left.

Two free throws by Wood tied the game for the final time at 74-74 with 1:53 left.

Bajema hit a baseline jumper on a feed from senior guard/forward/captain PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) (8 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) before Fraine made a steal and fed Shea for a wing jumper and a four-point lead, 78-74. Two free throws by Shea with 0:22 left made it a six-point game. Stapleton made a free throw for SNHU with 11 seconds left before Shea tacked on two more with eight seconds left to account for the seven-point final margin.
