Mike Baldarelli leads Greyhound men's basketball past Saint Anselm, 90-67, in Northeast-10 Conference semifinal; Hounds host Le Moyne Saturday at 2 p.m. for title

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) continued his superb play in the postseason scoring 26 points leading fifth-seeded Assumption College past ninth-seeded Saint Anselm College, 90-67, in the Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball semifinals THURSDAY night at the Laska Gym.
Baldarelli has scored 20, 21, and 26 points as the Greyhounds have swept their way to the championship game against Le Moyne College SATURDAY at 2 p.m. The Greyhounds have won the tournament in 1983 (beating American International, 96-84; 1991 (beating Bentley, 89-72) and 1998 (beating Saint Anselm, 93-73). They lost in the title game last year at Bentley, 93-77.
Sixth-seeded Le Moyne, now 20-10 overall, defeated seventh-seeded Southern New Hampshire, 61-55, in the other semifinal game.
The Greyhounds defeated the Dolphins twice this season, winning 79 76 in Syracuse and 90-79 in Worcester.
This game was decided in the first half as the Greyhounds shot a blistering .621 from the floor (18-for-29) while raining three-pointers at an incredible .706 clip (12-for-17). Defensively they stopped the usually sharp-shooting Hawks at eight-for-23 (.348).
Junior guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) was a catalyst off-the-bench for the Greyhounds with 15 points on five-for-seven floor accuracy (3-for-3 three-pointers) with three rebounds, three assists and a steal in 27 minutes, while senior guard/captain PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) added 13 points, four assists and six rebounds.
Junior forward GIOVANNI CARENZA (East Hanover, NJ/Saint Anthony's) led the Hawks with 16 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard THOMAS BAUDINET (Watertown, CT/Taft) added 13 points and junior guard GREG VETRANO (Andover, MA/Andover) 10 points.
The Hounds sped to a 20-7 lead out-of-the-gate.
Baudinet opened with a wing jumper for the Hawks then the Hounds got a baseline jumper Shea, a three-pointer by senior guard MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Christian) (8 points, 6 rebounds) and a three-pointer by Baldarelli to move to a quick 8-2 lead.
Carenza then buried a top-of-the-circle three-pointer matched by Shea from Bajema. After Carenza made a pair of free throws Baldarelli and Shea drilled long three-pointers, sophomore forward TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) made the first of two free throws and postgraduate forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) (8 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists) scored on a inside move on a feed from sophomore guard DOMINIQUE PRICE (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) to make it 20-7.
A three-pointer by Price, an inside move by Baldarelli and then a steal and dunk by Baldarelli gave the Greyhounds their largest lead of the game at 29 points, 48-19, with 3:46 left in the first half.
