Greg Twomey leads Greyhound rally past Le Moyne, 79-76, in Northeast-10 Conference game

SYRACUSE, NY --- Postgraduate forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) scored a game-high 27 points to lead Assumption College (3-3, 2-2) to a come-from-behind 79-76 win over Le Moyne College (2-3, 2-2) in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action here SUNDAY at Ted Grant Court.
Le Moyne jumped out to a 32-12 lead with 8:56 remaining in the first half behind the inside play of junior forward LAURENCE EKPERIGIN (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and perimeter shooting of freshman guard CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst). Ekperigin tallied seven of the Dolphins' opening 10 points to put Le Moyne ahead 10-4 just 2:39 into the game. Entering the game with Le Moyne leading 14-8 (15:53 left), Johnson scored 15 of the next 18 points for the Dolphins to open up a game-best 20-point advantage.
Assumption closed out the half with a 21-10 run to cut Le Moyne's lead at the half. Twomey scored seven points in the span for Assumption, while freshman guard KEVIN DONAHUE (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) (9 points, 3 three-pointers) hit a pair of three-pointers.
After the Dolphins' Ekperigin made a dunk with 4:01 left the Dolphins led 40-22. Twomey converted a layin and sophomore forward TOBIN HAASE (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) made two free throws before Twomey made another layin off a fastbreak to cut the gap to 40-28.
Le Moyne's Johnson then converted a jumper from the wing before Haase made a move inside on a feed from senior forward/captain PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) (12 rebounds, 4 assists) and Donahue made a three-pointer from the top of the circle to made a nine point game (42-33) at halftime.
After Ekperigin converted a layup in the paint for the Dolphins, Assumption scored 17 of the second half's next 19 points to take a 50-46 lead with 14:40 remaining.
Senior guard/captain MITCH BAJEMA (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian) (13 points, 3 three-pointers) made a jumper off a sophomore forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) (8 points, 4 reboun ds) assist and then Baldarelli and sophomore center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Grenada Hills) (14 points, 6 rebounds) made layups to cut the gap to five points (44-39). After LeMoyne freshman guard JAMES CORMIER (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull/Proctor Academy) (12 points, 7 assists) made a jumper in the paint the Greyhounds went on an 11-0 spurt to take command.
Twomey started with a move inside off a Baldarelli feed, then Bajema drilled a corner three-pointer followed by a pair of free throws by Shea to tie it 46-46 with 15:36 left. A dunk by Baldarelli and jumper by Fraine gave the Greyhounds a lead they would never relinquish, 50-46.
A three-pointer by Johnson cut the gap to 78-76 with three seconds left and a free throw by Twomey accounted for the final three-point margin.
The Greyhounds are next in action WEDNESDAY when they host the College of Saint Rose at 7:30 p.m. in the Laska Gym.
