SPARKHILL, NY --- Sophomore forward MIKE BALDARELLI (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) recorded his third double-double in his last four games with 20 points and 11 rebounds (and a career-best five steals) to lead Assumption College past St. Thomas Aquinas College, 61-52, in a non conference men's basketball game MONDAY night in Aquinas Hall.
The game, originally scheduled for December 20, was postponed due to snow.
The Greyhounds have now won four straight and nine of the last 10 games and move to 15-6 overall. St. Thomas Aquinas is now 7-13.
Sharing the spotlight for the Greyhounds was senior forward/captain PATRICK SHEA (Salem, MA/Salem) with his fourth double-double (third in the last five games) with 11 points, 11 rebounds; sophomore center SAVOY FRAINE (Grenada Hills, CA/Grenada Hills) (11 points, 6 rebounds) and postgraduate forward GREG TWOMEY (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) (11 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists).
Senior forward PIERRE GASPARD (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) was the lone double-figure scorer for the Spartans with 11 points.
When Shea made an inside move with 12:30 left in the first half the Greyhounds had slowly moved to a 11-4 lead. The Spartans however ran off a 14-0 spurt finished off by a junior guard VINCENT JOHNSON (Teaneck, NJ/Rice) three-pointer to move to a seven-point lead, 18-11, with 6:17 left. They would lead by six points, 29-23, at the half.
The Greyhounds outscored the Spartans 38-23 in the second half.
A layin by Gaspard with 18:17 left in the game gave the home team its largest lead at eight points, 33-25. The Greyhounds then outscored St. Thomas, 15-5 over the next five minutes to take command and lead by two points, 40-38, as Twomey drained a wing three-pointer with 13:16 left.
While St. Thomas Aquinas would lead one more time, 45-44 on a layin by senior forward AKEEM COMAS (Broolyn, NY/William Grady) the Greyhounds eventually forged ahead by eight points, 53-45, on a nice inside move by Fraine off a feed from junior guard COURTLAND BLUFORD (Ft. Washington, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) with 6:54 left.
The Greyhounds are next in action Saturday when they travel to American International College for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference tapoff.
