Greyhounds skate past Westfield State, 6-4, in non-confernece hockey game

WESTFIELD, Mass. --- Assumption College bolted to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 6-4 non-conference victory over Westfield State College in men's ice hockey action WEDNESDAY in Amelia Park Arena.

Assumption is now 3-10-3 overall, while Westfield State is now 9-4-3.

The Greyhounds set the tone early by scoring eight seconds into the game on a goal by sophomore forward PATRICK FITZGIBBONS (Holliston, MA/Saint John's). Freshman forwards PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Williston-Northampton) and TAYLOR LARSEN (Blackstone, MA/Worcester Academy) were credited with assists.

They then added two more goals in the first period.

Sophomore defenseman MARC LABB (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) scored from freshman forward DENNIS SILVIO (Beverly, MA/Beverly) at 4:13 and sophomore forward MICHAEL DWYER (Somerville, MA/Worcester Academy) from junior foward BEN KIRTLAND (Plymouth, NH/Holderness) made it 3-0 at 10:56.

They increased the lead to 4-0 1:15 into the second period on a power play goal by freshman defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massepequa, NY/Massapequa) on the power play at 1:15 of the second period. Larsen and junior defenseman JON RETELLE (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth) assisted.

After Westfield's A.J. SHIVERDECKER and BENNI SCHENNACH scored to get the Owls on the board, Dwyer scored his second of the game ay 18:53 on the power play to close the period.

The Owls closed to within a goal, 5-4, on Shiverdecker's second goal and a power play goal by MIKE MUOLLO with 2:03 remaining in the game. But Assumption iced the win Retelle's empty netter with 50 seconds remaining.

Freshman NICK BLANCHETTE (Stuart, FL/Worcester Academy) made 41 saves for the Greyhounds. Westfield State's IAN WILSON and RYAN MONROE made 34 combined saves.

The Greyhounds host Plymouth State University SATURDAY at 6:30 p.m. in the Buffone Rink.
