Southern New Hampshire skates past Ice Dogs, 8-5, in Northeast-10 Conference hockey

HOOKSETT, NH --- Southern New Hampshire University got goals from eight different scorers as it defeated Assumption College, 8-5, in a Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey game THURSDAY at The Ice Den.

The Penmen moved to a 4-0 first-period advantage and led 6-3 4:43 into the third period when the Greyhounds scored two goals to make it a one-goal game. A pair of empty net goals accounted for the final.

Senior defenseman DAVE CARROLL (Arlington, MA/South Kent), sophomore forward WILLIAM TOOMEY (Reading, MA) and sophomore forward ANDREW HILDRETH (Leominster, MA) each had a goal and an assist for Southern New Hampshire.

Five different players scored for the Greyhound with sophomore defenseman ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry/Tilton) leading the way with a goal and an assist.

Sophomore forward KEVIN DANIE (Feeding Hills, MA/Worcester Academy) opened the scoring just 3:52 into the game and Hildreth made it 2-0 at 6:24. Carroll and junior defenseman KENT HONEYMAN (Marietta, GA/Cushing Academy) each scored power-play goals to finish the first period with SNHU leading 4-0.

Sophomore forward MATT SCIOLI (North Reading, MA/North Reading/Bridgton, ME) scored an unassisted goal, his first of the season, for the Ice Dogs just 1:39 into the second period however the Penmen came back with a power-play goal by freshman defenseman ANTHONY PERCOLE (Hamden, CT) at 16:44 before Ice Dog sophomore forward PATRICK FITZGIBBONS (Holliston, MA/Saint John's) scored a power-play goal (his second goal of the season) with 16 seconds left in the period. Gaudreau and senior defenseman/captain CHRIS GENOVESE (Woburn, MA/Governors Academy) assisted on the goal.

Gaudreau made it a 5-3 game with an unassisted goal, his second of the season, just 1:07 into the final period before Toomey scored for the Penmen at 4:43.

Freshman forward PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Williston Northampton) scored his second goal of the season, an unassisted shorthanded goal, at 6:10 and sophomore defenseman MARC LABB (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow/Vermont Academy) added a power-play goal, his first goal of the season, from freshman forward DENNIS SILVIO (Beverly, MA/Beverly/Proctor Academy) at 8:46 to make it a one-goal game.

The Penmen added empty net goals by junior forward THOMAS OHLSON (York, ME/Bridgton, ME) and sophomore forward TROY MAYBURY (South Portland, ME/Bridgton, ME) in the final minute.

Junior goalkeeper SHANE BROOKS (Kennebunk, ME) made 26 saves for the Penmen as the Ice Dogs held a slim 31-28 edge in shots. Junior JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton) made 20 stops for Assumption. DiGiulio now has a 4.22 goals-against average and an .852 save percentage.

The Penmen improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the Greyhounds now stand at 1-4 and 0-2 in the league.

The Greyhounds are off until TUESDAY when they travel to Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Michael's College. Faceoff is at 7 p.m. at the Cairns Arena. Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it hosts Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m. at The Ice Den.
