WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College built a quick 2-0 lead in the first period en route to a 3-1 victory over Salve Regina University in the UBS Faceoff Classic third-place game SATURDAY night at the Buffone Rink.
The game also featured the goalkeeping of junior JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton) who made 29 saves including 18 in the final period. Sophomore defenseman MARC LABB (Longmeadow, MA/Tilton School) spearheaded the defense and assisted on a pair of goals.
In the nightcap, Fitchburg State College defeated Worcester State College, 1-0, to win championship as the Falcons' freshman goalkeeper BOBBY LEISER (Monroe, NY) outdueled the Lancers' junior ANDREW EVANS (Cromwell, CT). Leiser made 26 saves to post his first career shutout, while Evans was outstanding with 30 saves. Leiser earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
The Falcons scored the game's only goal in the second period as freshman forward TED FABIAN (Oakland, ME) beat Evans at 13:56. The goal was assisted by senior JOHN COUTTS (Milford, CT/Kent School) and senior AARON TIERNAN (Anchorage, AK).
Also named to the all-tournament team were: senior defenseman BILL KNUBER (Buffalo, NY) and freshman forward JOHN CAHALANE (Tewksbury, MA) of Worcester State; sophomore forward MATT ST. PIERRE (Alexandrai, VA/Hebron) of Assumption; senior forward CONOR MC CAHILL (Highlands Ranch, CO) of Salve Regina and Fitchburg State sophomore forward CHRIS RIGGS (Sewell, NJ).
In the opener, sophomore forward MATT ST. PIERRE (Alexandria, VA/Hebron) scored his third goal of the season on the power play 4:39 into the first period. Labb and junior defenseman JON RETELLE (Monmouth, ME/Kents Hill) assisted on the play.
Freshman PAT O'KANE (Hollis, NH/Williston-Northampton) scored his first career goal on a feed from Labb at 16:55 to make it 2-0.
Junior defenseman ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Tilton School) scored an unassisted empty netter with four second left to complete the scoring.
Junior forward PATRICK BAMBERY (Braintree, MA/Kents Hill) scored the lone Seahawk goal shorhanded at the 5:16 mark of the third period. Senior goalie CHASE GOODRICH (Salisbury, VT/Proctor Academy) made 23 saves.
Assumption is next in action Friday when they travel to Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce University. Faceoff at Winchendon School Rink is at 7 p.m. Salve Regina is next in action Thursday at Curry College at 7:35 p.m.
Fitchburg State hosts Curry Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Worcester State is at Wentworth, also on Tuesday, at 3:15 p.m.
