Franklin Pierce power play goals stop Greyhound hockey, 6-2, in Northeast-10 Conference game

WINCHENDON, Mass. --- Junior forward PHIL LA BRECK (Thornton, NH/John Stark Regional) scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and added an assist FRIDAY as Franklin Pierce University sored five power-play goals to post a 6-2 victory over Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference game at the Winchendon School Ice Arena.
Senior forward FRANK BOVA (Princeton, MA/Wachusett) and junior defenseman JON RETELLE (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth) each scored for the Greyhounds.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period on the power play at the 17:22 mark. Senior forward JEFF KASPER (South Boston, MA/Catholic Memorial) fed it to sophomore forward SEAN WOODRING (Rogue River, OR/Rogue River) who scored his first goal of the season from the bottom of the right circle.
The Ravens increased the lead to 5-0 with four power-play goals in the second period. Junior forward CASEY GOODELL (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) started the flurry when he jammed the rebound of a Woodring shot into the net from the right side of the net for his second goal of the season 4:15 into the period. LaBreck followed with the eventual game-winner on a two-man advantage at the 8:18 mark with his first goal off a feed from senior forward JAY STEMPNIAK (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis).
Just 1:19 later freshman forward NATE SCHURSKY (Scottsdale, AZ/Eugene Generals) scored his first career goal on a rebound. LaBreck scored his second goal of the period at the 19:36 mark.
The Greyhounds would get as close as 5-2 with a pair of two-man advantage goals just 47 seconds apart in the second half of the third period.
First, Bova converted from the left side off the rebound of a shot by freshman forward PAT O'KANE (Hollis NH/Williston-Northampton) taken from the right-wing circle. Freshman defenseman KEVIN GLANZMAN (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) was also credited with an assist at 13:49 on Bova's first goal of the season.
Then, at the 14:36 mark, Retelle fed the puck to freshman forward DENNIS SILVIO (Beverly, MA/Proctor Academy) on the right side. Silvio sent it back to the point and Retelle rifled the shot through traffic and into the net for his first goal. Junior defenseman ADAM GAUDREAU (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) collected an assist on the play.
Franklin Pierce capped the scoring with seven seconds to play when Woodring scored his second of the game from the right side on an assist from junior defenseman KYLE KRUSE (Bourne, MA/Bourne).
Assumption held a slim, 25-24 advantage in shots on goal over the full 60 minutes. Junior goaltender JON TUTTLE (Concord, NH/Concord) made 23 saves to earn the victory in net for Franklin Pierce. Junior JAMIE DI GIULIO (Peabody, MA/Tilton School) started and took the loss while making 11 saves against 14 shots over the opening 28:18 for Assumption. Freshman NICK BLANCHETTE (Stuart, FL/Worcester Academy) played the final 31:42 and made seven saves against 10 shots.
The Ravens (1-1-1, 1-0-0 Northeast-10 travel to Salve Regina Saturday, November 22. Assumption (1-2-0, 0-1-0) returns to action Tuesday at Western New England.
