Massachusetts Lowell 4, Assumption 2

LOWELL, Mass. --- Junior midfielder MOLLY CLAY (Rockport, MA/Rockport) scored one goal and assisted on two others as the University of Massachusetts Lowell, currently ranked No. 4 in this week's NFHCA national poll, defeated Assumption College, 4-2, here THURSDAY night in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action.

The win was the third straight for the River Hawks, which improved to 14-3 overall and 14-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference entering Saturday's home match with No. 8 Southern Connecticut at 1 p.m. The Greyhounds slipped to 2-15 overall and 1-14 in the conference and host Saint Michael's Sunday at 2 p.m. in another conference game.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in the fourth minute as senior midfielder MISSY SEELY (East Hampstead, NH/Hampstead) converted off a penalty corner on an assist from junior forward JACI MOULTON (Baldwinville, MA/Quabbin).

Clay had a hand in all three River Hawk goals in the second half and set up a goal by sophomore forward LIZ DAY (North Andover, MA/North Andover) just 58 seconds into the half. Clay passed the ball into the circle and Day deflected it past Assumption sophomore goalkeeper DANIELLE LUONGO (Northboro, MA/Algonquin).

Day returned the favor to Clay three minutes later when she sent a pass through the crease, which Clay stroked in from the left side to make it 3-0.

The Greyhounds pulled one back against the run of play in the 48th minute as junior forward HILLARY ZYSK (Walpole, MA/Walpole) took a pass off a penalty corner, found junior defender MICHELLE PASQUALE (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) to the left of the goal, who stroked a shot inside the far post.

Sophomore forward KATIE ENAIRE (Amesbury, MA/Amesbury) gave the River Hawks a 4-1 lead when Clay sent a ball into the circle, which Enaire tipped high into the goal.

Zysk brought the Hounds closer in the 68th when she circled around two defenders and tucked a shot past River Hawks' sophomore goalie AMY CARBON (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) to cut the lead to 4-2.

UMass Lowell outshot Assumption 22-5 overall and 13-4 on target. Carbon had two saves while Luongo stopped nine shots for the Greyhounds.
