Eighth-ranked Southern Connecticut stops Greyhound field hockey

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Senior midfielder captain GRACE MARTHA (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and sophomore midfielder ANN BERRY (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) each had five points to lead a balanced offense as No. 8 Southern Connecticut State University ran its win streak to four straight with a 6-1 win over Assumption College.
The Owls are now 10-6 overall and 10-4 in the conference; the Greyhounds are 2-14 and 1-13.
Assumption struck first on a goal from senior forward SANDY GARNEY (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) just over 17 minutes into the game. Garney tipped in a rebound off a penalty corner as junior forward HILLARY ZYSK (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and junior defender MICHELLE PASQUALE (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) both assisted on the play.
Southern Connecticut evened the score with 3:20 left in the first half as senior midfielder WHITNEY MARTIN (Harwinton, CT/Lewis Mills) scored on an inside feed from freshman forward INGA STONGA (East London, South Africa/Cambridge).
Five second-half goals put the game away for the Owls.
Junior forward KELLYANNE MC CAFFERY (Durham, NH/Oyster River) scored on the first of three Berry assists at 42:20 to put the Owls in front to stay.
Berry scored moments later at 54:50 followed by Martin at 61:54 and two late goals by Martha including one on a penalty stroke.
Sophomore goalie LAUREN ZARRELLA (Morris, CT/Wamogo) made nine saves in net for the Owls, while senior JACQUE DULONG (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) made eight saves for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds are at Mass. Lowell Thursday night.
