Greyhound field hockey beaten by late goal by Franklin Pierce, 2-1, in Northeast-10 action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore ASHLEY MOIRONO (Vero Beahc, FL/South Burlington) scored on a free hit in the circle with less than two minutes left to lift Franklin Pierce University past Assumption College, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey FRIDAY night at the the Multi-Sport Stadium.

Moirono's goal came as a deflection into the net during a scramble of the free hit. The Greyhounds are now 2-13 overall and 1-12 in the conference, while Franklin Pierce is now 6-8 overall and 6-7 in the conference.

Senior forward MAURA STRICKLAND (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) opened the scoring in the first half scoring her third goal of the season on the Greyhounds only shot on net in the period. Junior forward HILLARY ZYSK (Walpole, MA/Walpole) fed Strickland who soloed in on the goalie and beat her to the left side with a quick wrist shot at 8:07.

The Ravens came back to deadlock matters at 1-1 at the break.

Freshman forward DANIELLE DOLAN (West Brookfield, MA/Quaboag) scored on a cross net deflection at 24:10. Junior forward ASHLEY ABERNETHY (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) was credited with the assist on the play.

Hounds senior goalkeeper JACQUE DULONG (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) made six saves for the Greyhounds, while freshman KRISTIN TORMOLLAN (Waterville, ME/Waterville) made just one save for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce outshot the Greyhounds, 11-3, and also had a 7-3 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.

The Greyhounds won the previous meeting between the two teams (September 13), 1-0, in overtime behind the shutout goaltending of DuLong. They are next in action when they travel to Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State Tuesday at 7 p.m. Franklin Pierce hosts conference rival Bentley College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
