September 6, 2008
GARDEN CITY, NY --- Assumption College field hockey built a 3-0 lead over host Adelphi University and then rode the sturdy goalkeeping of sophomore DANIELLE LUONGO (Northboro, MA/Algonquin) to a 3-2 win SATURDAY.
Junior forward HILLARY ZYSK (Walpole, MA/Walpole) (PICTURED RIGHT) opened the scoring for the Greyhounds scoring a pretty unassisted goal on a straightaway shot in front of the Adelphi netminder LUCIA VIGLIOTTI (Westbury, NY/Clark) in the 28th minute.
The Greyhounds' offense then roared back with two penalty corner goals within seven seconds of each other just four minutes later.
Senior forward MAURA STRICKLAND (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) scored off a penalty corner on a assist from senior forward SANDY GARNEY (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) and just seven seconds later junior defender/midfielder MICHELLE PASQUALE (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) scored on a second penalty corner, this time with senior midfielder BRITTANY FORD (Worcester, MA/Notre Dame) assisting.
Adelphi's high-scoring freshman forward JULIANNE GERBINO (Port Jefferson, NY/Vandermeulen) made things interesting scoring back-to-back goals with 16:37 and 15:00 left in the second half.
The Greyhounds outshot the home team, 12-11, and enjoyed a healthy 7-2 advantage in penalty corners. Luongo made five saves in net for the Greyhounds in registering her first win. Vigliotti made five saves for Adelphi.
The Greyhounds, now 1-1, are at L.I.U.-C.W. Post today at 2 p.m. as they continue this weekend trip to Long Island, New York. They host American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference game Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Multi-Sport Stadium.
