Southern Connecticut 28, Assumption 12

NEW HAVEN, Conn. --- Senior quarterback CHRIS ROBERTS (New Britain, CT/New Britain) completed 22-of-38 passes for 244 yards and three touchdown as Southern Connecticut defeated Assumption College, 28-12, in a Northeast-10 Conference football game here SATURDAY at Dow Field.

Defensively, however, the game belonged to the Greyhounds' senior safety CHRIS MARTINO (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) who made a career-high 9-10--19 tackles and had two interceptions, one for a team-record 99-yard return and a touchdown. In the process, he became the eighth Greyhound player to record 140-160--300 career tackles.

The game also featured the performance of Owls' senior wide receiver CHRIS BERGESKI (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston), who caught nine passes for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the punting of Hounds' freshman GREG NOWAK (West Palm Beach, FL/Wellington)---the Northeast-10 Conference leader---who punted six times for a 44.7 average including a 64-yarder.

The Greyhounds took the opening kickoff and marched downfield, driving 60 yards in 16 plays and chewing 7:32 off the clock. A 25-yard pass from sophomore quarterback ANDY KUPEC (Wyckhoff, NJ/Indian Hills) to senior wide receiver JOEY FABIANO (Westwood, MA/Westwood) highlighted the march, which ended with freshman placekicker ZACK OKOLOWITCZ (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) missing wide right on a 23-yard field goal attempt.

On their second possession, the Owls moved in for a quick touchdown marching 66 yards in just five plays. Roberts found senior wide receiver JONATHAN LEE (Norwalk, CT/McMahon) for 10 yards, sophomore running back JOHN WIECHMANN (Buxton, ME/Bonny Eagle) rambled for 12 yards and, finally, Roberts connected with Bergeski for 30 yards and for 15 yards and the score with 1:51 left in the first period. Freshman placekicker CHRIS HAZELTON (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) kicked the conversion for a 7-0 advantage.

In the waning minutes of the half, the Greyhounds finally struck paydirt as sophomore quarterback JOSH RATACIK (Manchester, NH/Central) found Fabiano on a 13-yard touchdown strike on a crossing pattern. The conversion attempt failed leaving the Owls up by a point 6:49 left in the half.

On the ensuing series, the Owls scored again as Roberts and Bergeski hooked up on a 26-yard scoring play on a post pattern. Hazelton's conversion gave Southern a 14-6 halftime lead.

The second half began with the Owls driving toward an insurance score. Junior return man RAMON JOHNSON (Orange, NJ/Ferris) returned the kickoff 28 yards to the 37 knocked out of bounds by Okolowitcz. Roberts then found senior wide receiver TY MARSHALL (College Park, GA/Kennedy) on back-to-back plays for 12 and five yards and then Weichman rushed for eight and six yards to the Greyhounds' six-yard line. Roberts' next pass however was picked off by Martino and returned 99 yards for a touchdown. The two-point attempt by the Greyhounds failed leaving the score, 14-12, with 2:21 left in the third period. The interception extended Martino's career varsity record to 11.

On the next possession however the Owls put it away with methodical 11-play, 70-yard march capped by a junior tailback JEROM FREEMAN (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) three-yard burst up-the-middle. Freeman rushed six times for 40 yards in the march and Roberts completed four-of-five passes for 30 yards. Hazelton's conversion made it an nine-point game, 21 12.

Roberts tossed a five-yard scoring pass to Wiechman with 3:10 remaining to account for the final.

NEXT WEEK: the Greyhounds host Merrimack College in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. in the Multi-Sport Stadium Saturday (November 8, 2008).
