Cory Bailey named Greyhounds "new" football coach
March 11, 2009
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Cory Bailey, of Wrentham, MA, has been named head football coach at Assumption College effective immediately.
Bailey replaces Adam Fuller, who replaced him just a year ago when Bailey resigned in January 2008 to accept a position in the private sector. Meanwhile Fuller has apparently accepted a position as defensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga with his former coordinator, according to footballscoop.com. Fuller served as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond under Russ Huesman, recently hired as the Chattanooga head coach.
The Bailey announcement was made by Ted Paulauskas, Director of Athletics.
"We are thrilled to have Coach Bailey back at Assumption," said Paulauskas. "Cory brings superb skills in organization, recruiting, relationship building and creativeness. He fully supports Assumption's commitment to providing our student-athletes with the best possible experience. Even more importantly, he appreciates their academic priorities and the fact that an Assumption education prepares them to excel in life."
"I am very excited about coming back to Assumption College," said Bailey. "We have very talented people on our team and on our staff. The Assumption College administration and Board of Trustees have made a strong commitment to continue to enhance our highly competitive athletics program that brings out the very best in all of our student-athletes. There is a lot of work to be done over the next few months, obviously putting the finishing touches on our recruiting class, preparing for spring workouts and finalizing our staff."
Bailey posted a 13-28 overall record with the Greyhounds from 2004-07, winning four games in each of his last three seasons. The team finished 4-7 in 2007 winning its last three games.
They defeated Division I-A LaSalle University (10-7) on-the-road, beat perennial conference powerhouse L.I.U.-C.W. Post (31-24) at home and finished with a 10-7 conference win at Pace.
"This is a very crucial time for our program, as it is for all collegiate programs, with regard to recruitment and staff building," continued Paulauskas. "We are very excited about our future and Cory is the perfect person to bring this team to the next level."
The 32-year-old Bailey was a standout performer for Coach Nick Quataro at Fordham University from 1994-97. He earned first-team all-Patriot League honors at center in both 1996 and 1997 and was a pre-season all America selection in several publications prior to the 1997 season. He captained the team in 1997 and was named its Most Valuable Player. He graduated from Fordham with a bachelor of arts in economics with a minor in communications in May 1998.
After graduation Bailey signed as a free agent with the National Football League's New York Giants and survived through official mini-camp and summer camp. He also was a clinician at the New Jersey High School Coaches' Clinic.
In June 1999 he was named an assistant coach at Dean College (Franklin, MA)---coaching both the defensive line and the special teams --- and also coordinated the strength and conditioning programs. The defense was ranked second in the nation among junior college programs. He has since became a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.
In January 2000 he was named assistant coach at Iona College (New Rochelle, NY)---coaching tight ends, offensive tackles and long snappers. He left Iona to play professionally after being a seventh-round draft selection of the Rhein Fire (Dusseldorf, Germany) in NFL Europe. He started at offensive guard and did all the long snapping, while also participating in film breakdown and scouting of opponents.
He came back to coach at his hometown high school---King Philip Regional (Wrentham, MA)---as both the head freshman coach and varsity defensive coordinator and offensive line coach. After an internship with the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers (summer 2003), he assumed head coach duties at Assumption College in 2004.
