Greyhound baseball rallies to defeat Worcester State, 12-11; Andy Quinn, Derek Migrants share spotlight

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 10-10 tie en route to a 12-11 win over Worcester State College in a non-conference baseball game TUESDAY at Rocheleau Field.
Junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) and freshman first baseman FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) produced RBI singles to give the Greyhounds a two-run cushion.
Junior lefthander ANDY QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle Cassidy) struck out six in his superb 2.1 innings of relief to pick up the victory, while junior righthander TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield) notched his third save of the season to become the Greyhounds career leader with 10.
The Greyhounds moved to a 10-3 advantage through six innings only to have Worcester State power bring the Lancers back even.
Junior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) hammered an inside-the-park homerun (his fourth of the season) to left centerfield in the first inning for the Greyhounds. Sophomore designated hitter SHANE COAKLEY (Spencer, MA/David Prouty) hammered his third home run of the season and junior third baseman NICK DORTANA (Malden, MA/Malden Catholic) drove across another with an RBI double as the Lancers tied the game 2-2 in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, the Greyhounds got RBI singles from senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), Migrants, and senior third baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) and a RBI fielders choice from freshman catcher MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) to take a 6-2 lead after three innings. Baillargeon now has 215 career hits
A two-run triple by Migrants---who finished with a single, triple, home run and five RBI---highlighted a four-run fourth inning to stretch the lead to 10-2.
The Lancers then scored eight unanswered runs.
In the fifth inning senior centerfielder MATT HART (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) hammered his second homer of the season and sophomore first baseman NICK FLUEGGE (Ware, MA/Ware) hit a monster two-run homer (his third of the season) in a three-run fifth inning. The Lancers had six hits including RBI singles by Fluegge, Coakley and sophomore shortstop RYAN RALEIGH (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) to highlight a five-run sixth.
Sophomore COREY ABBASCIA (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) singled across a run in the ninth inning for Worcester State to make things interesting.
Assumption is now 12-10 overall, while Worcester State is 8-9. The Greyhounds are at Southern New Hampshire University WEDNESDAY at 3:30 p.m. in a Northeast-10 Conference game.
