Derek Migrants powers Greyhound baseball past Mass. Lowell, 11-4, in Northeast-10 Conference action

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) had two doubles and five RBI, while senior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) and freshman catcher MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) each had four hits to lead Assumption College past the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 11-4, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action TUESDAY at Rocheleau Field.
Sophomore righthander ZACH JACQUES (Jefferson, MA/Saint John's) improved his record to 3-2 scattering seven hits over the first six innings with six strike outs.
Also, junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burcoat) became the 63rd Greyhounds to amass 100 career hits with a sixth-inning single.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring quickly with three first-inning runs. Sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) opened by getting hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name). Migrants knocked in the first run with an infield grounder, while Foley and senior third baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) singled across single runs.
A solo home run by junior outfielder PETER ONORATO (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence), his first of the season, got UMass Lowell on the board in the second inning.
A Migrants' two-run double and an error made it 6-0 in the fourth inning. Freshman designated hitter FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) hammered a two-run home run to rightfield and Migrants added his second two-run double as the Greyhounds built a 10-1 advantage. An RBI single by Scannell made it 11-1 in the sixth inning.
The Greyhounds are now 22-13-1 overall and 14-6-1 in the conference (second place). They are ranked No. 2 in the this week's New England Coaches Poll behind league leader Franklin Pierce. UMass Lowell is now 20 13 and 12-9.
The Greyhounds and River Hawks play at Lowell THURSDAY in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
