Derek Migrants, Michael Colebrook key Greyhound baseball to split with Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Junior outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) stroked a key two-run double to highlight a five-run sixth inning as Assumption College defeated the College of Saint Rose, 8-2, in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader SATURDAY at Rocheleau Field.
In the opener, senior rightander JEREMIAH SAINT LOUIS (Tupper Lake, NY/Tupper Lake) scattered seven hits in a complete game effort to lead the Golden Knights to a 3-1 victory. Saint Louis fanned 15 and threw an amazing 153 pitches in the game.
The Greyhounds are now 28-17-1 overall and 19-9-1 in the conference in second place. Saint Rose is 22-24-0 overall and 15-14 in the conference, tied for sixth place, the final playoff spot.
The two teams play another doubleheader SUNDAY with only the first game a conference game. The other important matchup for the Greyhounds ultimate conference fate is Southern Connecticut State hosting Southern New Hampshire in a single conference game. Southern Connecticut is currently 19-10 in the conference, one half behind the Greyhounds.
If the Hound win the game they finish second, if not they would need Southern Connecticut to lose. If they finish second they would draw a bye in the playin round and start conference playoff action Friday. If they finish third they would host a playin game Wednesday.
Saint Louis outdueled the Hounds' senior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) while his teammates scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings.
An RBI single by junior outfielder DEREK MARSHALL (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) made it 1-0 in the first inning, while sophomore outfielder GARRETT KEENAN (Massapequa, NY/Saint John the Baptist) had an RBI single in the fifth and sophomore shortstop RYAN BURKE (Troy, NY/LaSalle) knocked across an insurance run with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) knocked across the lone Greyhound run with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
In the second game back-to-back sacrifice flies by senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name)and Migrants staked the Greyhounds to a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Saint Rose tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning as senior first baseman PAUL PARTRIDGE (Uniontown PA/John Jay) and fresman shorstop JESSE BURBA (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester) cohntributed RBI singles.
The Greyhounds put it away in the sixth inning.
Scafidi led with a line drive home run, his fifth of the season, over the fence in rightcenter. Senior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) singled through the box and junior catcher MATTHEW JOSE (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) reached on a hit by pitch (his second in three innings). Senior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) (three hits in the game) reached on a slow infield roller and DiReda rambled home on an errant throw on the play.
After Baillargeon was intentionally walked to load the bases, Migrants blooped a double to leftcenter scoring two runs and an errant throw plated the third run. Scannell doubled in an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Junior lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) allowed two runs and struck out seven through six innings, while junior righthander DUSTIN WIRZBURGER (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) (1 inning) and sophomore righthander DAVE MC LEAN (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) (2 innings) pitched scoreless baseball over the final three innings to preserve the victory.
