Mike Baillargeon joins 200-hit club as Greyhounds baseball sweeps Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) became just the ninth player in Assumption College history (since 1912) to record 200 career hits and three teammates had three hits to lead a 15-hit offense as Assumption College defeated Stonehill College, 9-1, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader SATURDAY at Rocheleau Field.
In the second game freshman MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) ripped a one-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Greyhounds a walk-off, 11-10, victory.
Baillargeon had five hits in the doubleheader to bring his career total to 204 in fifth-place all-time. (see complete list below) He also became the 21st player to score 100 runs and now has 102.
In the first game senior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) pitched two-hit ball over seven innings to improve his record to 3-0, while junior righthander DENNIS WIRZBURGER (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and sophomore righthander DAVE MC LEAN (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) each pitched a scoreless inning for the Greyhounds.
Sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian), sophomore outfielder JOSH DUFRESNE (Auburn, MA/Auburn) each had three hits to pace the attack.
Senior first baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) had four hits and four RBI, while Baillargeon added three hits and three RBI---both hit home runs---to lead the Greyhounds 14-hit attack in the second game. Junior catcher RYAN HEALEY (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) had three hits and three RBI to pace Stonehill.
FIRST GAME: Junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) led the second inning with a walk, moved to third on a double by Foley and scored on Dufresne infield ground ball to open the scoring, 1-0.
Baillargeon opened the third inning with a ringing double to the leftcenter field gap and Frigon looped a single to centerfield. Junior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) then singled up-the-middle to make it 2-0.
The Hounds put it away with a four-run fourth inning. Frigon plated two runs with a single and Migrants doubled home two more.
The Skyhawks scored their lone run in the fifth inning on a junior third baseman MATT SKANE (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee) sacrifice fly.
A base-loaded walk to Baillargeon plated a run for the Greyhounds in the fifth and they added two more in the sixth on a Foley fielders choice and and a Dufresne RBI single.
SECOND GAME: Healey singled across a run in the first inning as Stonehill took a quick lead before the Greyhounds erupted to move to a 7-1 advantage.
DiReda tripled across two runs in the second, while Baillargeon had a two-run triple and DiReda hammered a two-run homer to highlight a five-run second inning. Five unearned runs in the fifth inning tied the game at 8-8 for Stonehill.
Stonehill finally took the lead in the sixth inning on a single by senior outfielder NATE WEBER (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson) and pair of stolen bases (he scored on an overthrow) to make it 9-8.
An infielder ground out by sophomore WALLY DEROSIER (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) tied it 9-9 in the eighth before Stonehill retook the lead, 10-9, on a squeeze bunt by junior outfielder ROB VAN STEIN (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull). Foley won it for the Hounds in the bottom of the ninth.
The Greyhounds are now 8-7 overall and 2-0 (first place) in the conference, while Stonehill is 7-8 and 0-2. The teams play a single game SUNDAY at 1 p.m. at Stonehill.
