Steve Scannell leads Greyhound baseball past Southern New Hampshire, 7-2, in Northeast-10 Conference action

MANCHESTER, NH --- Senior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) stroked four hits including a double and knocked across two runs to lead Assumption College past Southern New Hampshire University, 7-2, in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball game here MONDAY.

The Greyhounds, who lead the Northeast-10 Conference in hitting at .303 (the only team over .300), banged out 17 more hits to improve their record to 17-11-1 overall and 10-4-1 in the conference. S.N.H.U. is now 11 17-1 and 8-9-1.

Assumption plays at Franklin Pierce University TUESDAY in a battle for first-place in the league. Franklin Pierce (10-4) has a one-half game margin entering the important game. The Greyhounds are ranked third in this week's New England Division II Coaches Poll and Franklin Pierce (18-13) is ranked second behind UMass Lowell (16-9).

Senior lefthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) scattered four hits over five innings, while junior righthander DENNIS WIRZBURGER (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and junior lefthander ANDREW QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle Cassidy) were effective in relief.

The Greyhounds opened quickly scoring two runs in the second inning and and two more in the third. In the second, they got back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) and senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) that scored sophomore outfielder JOSH DUFRESNE (Auburn, MA/Auburn) and Scannell.

In the third, freshman catcher MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) led off with an infield single and scored on a double to the gap by senior third baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's). DiReda scored on an RBI single by Scannell.

The Penmen got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman KOBY THIBAULT (Salisbury, MA/Triton).

The Greyhounds made it a 5-1 game in the seventh when Baillargeon led off with a single and eventually scored on a single by junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat).

SNHU would add a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by TIM RINES (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack), while the Hounds scored two more in the ninth on back-to-back RBI singles by Dufresne and Scannell.

Frigon ended with three hits, while Baillargeon, Foley, and junior designated hitter MATTHEW JOSE (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) had two hits apiece for the Greyhounds. Baillargeon started his 160th game for the Gryehounds to break Mike O'Keefe's record of 159.
