Greyhounds baseball sweeps past Pace, 13-4 and 4-3, to move to within a half game of first place in Northeast-10 Conference

PLEASANTVILLE, NY --- Senior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/St. Peter- Marian) pitched seven strong innings and junior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) had four hits and five RBI as Assumption College defeated Pace University, 13-4, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader here SATURDAY at Finnerty Field.

In the nightcap, the senior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) stroked a two-run single as the Greyhounds scored two runs in the ninth inning to win, 4-3, and move to within a half game of first-place in the conference.

The Greyhounds are now 14-10 overall and 7-3 in conference play, tied with Bentley University a half game behind UMass Lowell (8-3).

Barbale improved to 4-1 with his performance, while junior lefthander ANDREW QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle Cassidy) and sophomore righthander DAVE MC LEAN (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) each pitched a scoreless inning.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Migrants' RBI single. They scored two more in the third inning on a freshman outfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) RBI single and a Migrants sacrifice fly. Migrants had a two-run single in a five-run eighth and another one in the ninth inning.

In the second, game junior righthander MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) pitched 7.2 innings allowing seven hits with three strikeouts. Hounds' closer, junior righthander TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield) improved his record to 3-1 with three strikeouts over the final 1.1 innings.

Pace took a 2-0 lead as junior outfielder MIKE TORELLO (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) singled across a pair of runs. Senior thrid baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) tripled in a run in the fourth and Migrants homered in the sixth inning for Assumption to cut the lead to tie it at 2-2.

Senior shortstop ANDRE LISCINSKY (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) singled across the go-ahead run for Pace in the bottom of the eighth to set the stage for Scannell in the ninth.

The Hounds and Pace continue this three-game weekend series SUNDAY with a single game at Rocheleau Field at 1 p.m.
