Greyhound baseball earns N.C.A.A. regional berth; Mike Baillargeon named Northeast-10 Player-of-the-Year

WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Assumption College baseball team, which set a team-record this season with 32 victories has earned its third N.C.A.A. Division II regional tournament berth.

The six-team double-elimination tournament will be hosted by second seeded Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, NH Thursday through Sunday, May 14-17. The winner will advance to the N.C.A.A. Division II National Championship at the Baseball Training Center in Cary, NC, May 23-30, 2009 for another double-elimination tournament.

Dominican, NY College (37-12) has been selected as the top-seed in the tournament followed by Franklin Pierce (37-16), Adelphi, NY (31-14), Dowling (30-15), Assumption (32-19-1) and Wilmington, DE (27-27).

The Greyhounds will open play Thursday at a time to be still determined against Franklin Pierce University.

Assumption College is making its third N.C.A.A. regional appearance having participated in both the 1978 and 1982 championships. The 1978 team coached by Bill Granahan ‘68 was the first team 20-game winner in Greyhound history at 20-12-1, while the 1982 team, which finished 20-9, was coached by Barry Glinski.

Hounds MIKE BAILLARGEON named Northeast-10 Player of the Year

Senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) has been named the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Player of-the-Year in a vote of the league's head coaches. Baillargeon is the sixth Greyhound to be so honored.

Head coach GEORGE REIDY (Worcester, MA) was named the Coach-of-the-Year and TEN other Greyhounds have received postseason accolades. This is the fourth time an Assumption College coach has been so honored---Barry Glinski earned the honor three times (1982, 87 and 88).

Baillargeon, senior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) and junior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) were named to the first-team.

Named to the second-team were sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian), senior rightfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) and junior righthanded closer TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield High).

Named to the third team were junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat), senior righthanded starting pitcher JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) and sophomore catcher/outfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's).

Freshman righthanded pitcher/designated hitter FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) earned a spot on the all-rookie team.

In addition, junior lefthanded pitcher MICHAEL COLEBROOK (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) all-region academic first-team and will be eligible for academic all-America honors.

Baillargeon, who was just named the Assumption College male athlete of-the-year (Rev. Armand Desautels, A.A. Memorial Award) for the second straight year, is among the leaders in several offensive categories in the conference statistics. He is currently batting .401 (81-for-202, leads the conference in hits) with 11 home runs (leads the conference), 44 runs batted in, 55 runs (leads the conference), 12 stolen bases, a .658 slugging percentage and 13 doubles. He holds the Greyhound career marks for games played (184), games started (184), at bats (719), hits (264) and triples (15, tied) among others.

DiReda is batting .286 with nine home runs (third in the conference) and 43 runs batted in and careerwise owns a .300 average with 165 hits in 550 at bats in 143 games. He recently picked up his 100th run batted in (104). Migrants leads the conference in runs batted in (59) and is batting .359 (.592 slugging percentage) with seven home runs with 74 hits in 206 at bats and 47 runs scored (fourth in the conference).

Frigon, one of the premier defensive shortstops in the conference, is batting .298 with 23 runs batted in, 11 stolen bases and a team-leading 12 sacrifices (leads the conference). Scannell is the current batting leader in the conference at .412 with 56 hits in 136 at bats, while Dupuis is currently 4-1 overall with a 1.67 earned run average in a team-record 27 games (leads the conference) as the Greyhound closer. He enters the regional tournament with a conference-leading 10 saves and 25 games finished (leads the conference).

Barbale is 8-3 overall (second in wins in the conference) with a 4.16 earned run average in 78.2 innings. He has pitched more innings that anyone in Greyhound history (289.0). Scafidi is at .325 with 5 home runs, 32 rbi and 15 hit-by-pitch (leads the conference), while Foley, who divides his time between catching and playing the outfield, is at .268 with 1 home run and 31 runs batted in. Flynn is 5-1 on the mound and batted .250 with two home runs and seven RBI as a part-time designated hitter.

Colebrook is currently 4-3 on the mound with a 4.48 earned run average. He was just named the winner of the Rev. Alfred R. Berthiaume, A.A. ‘32 Memorial Award for going "above and beyond," at the department's award presentations last Monday.

Also, at the College's annual Honors Convocaation, he was presented the Omer and Laurette Boivin Scholarship for French/foreign languages. He tutors both French and philosophy in the Academic Support Center and has studied abroad in France (the Sorbonne) and Quebec, Canada. His future includes graduate school for philosophy and teaching at the collegiate level. He has earned Student-Athlete Director's Citations (3.5 grade point average or higher) in all five previous semesters including a perfect 4.00 in the fall of 2007.

He was named to the CoSIDA academic first-team all-academic region team in both 2008 and 2009 and was named a Northeast-10 Conference all star and all-academic last year (this year's awards have yet to be announced). He has captained the team in both 2008 and 2009 and has been elected again for 2010. He was also named an Augustine Scholar---the premier award the College grants. Students must be juniors or seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and must be noted for excellence in academics, leadership, character and service.
