WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman catcher/outfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) stroked five hits, junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) hit his first career grand slam and junior reliever TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield) picked up his sixth save as Assumption College defeated Merrimack College, 7-6, in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader SATURDAY at Rocheleau Field.
In the opener senior outfielder JEFF BERCUME (Leicester, MA/Saint John's) hit a pair of home runs and drive across five runs to lead Merrimack past the Greyhounds, 8-6.
Freshman righthander FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/St. Peter Marian) pitched 5.1 innings surrendering five hits and three runs to improve his record to 4-0. DuPuis finished matters with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for his sixth save and lowered his earned run average to 1.88.
Foley is the 36th player in Greyhounds' history to have five hits in a game and the first since senior MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) accomplished it in 2006. Baillargeon became the career-leader in games played for the Greyhounds with 165 breaking Hall of Famer Mike O'Keefe ‘92 (Chelmsford, MA) record of 164.
Scafidi hit his grand slam in the first inning for the Greyhounds over the fence in rightfield and Foley singled across the fifth run in the second inning. Sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian) knocked across runs in the third and fifth inning---he finished with three hits to raise his average to .315.
Freshman outfielder PAT CHARETTE (Carver, MA/Coyle Cassidy) knocked across a pair of runs to key a Merrimack comeback to make it a one-run game.
In the opener, junior RYAN MC NEILL (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield) pitched one-hit relief over the final three innngs to backbone the Warriors come-from-behind win. Baillargeon slugged his team-leading eighth home run in the sixth inning and senior third baseman MIKE DIREDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) hit his fourth in the second inning.
The Greyhounds, now 19-13-1 overall and 12-6-1 in the conference remain in second place behind Franklin Pierce (13-5). Merrimack is now 14 18 and 5-13. The two teams play another doubleheader SUNDAY at Merrimack beginning at 12 noon.
