Greyhounds sweep past Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference baseball behind Jeff Barbale and Joe Martini

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. --- Senior righthander JEFF BARBALE (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) scattered seven hits in a complete game performance leading Assumption College past Merrimack, 10-5, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action here SUNDAY.
In the second game, a non-conference affair, sophomore righthander JOE MARTINI (Arlington, MA/Arlington Catholic) with relief help from junior lefthander ANDREW QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle Cassidy) and junior righthander TIM DUPUIS (Suffield, CT/Suffield) stopped the Warriors, 6-2.
Senior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) led Greyhounds offense in the opener with three hits and four RBI, while freshman catcher MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) and senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) also had three hits each in an 18-hit attack.
The Hounds opened quickly as Foley's RBI single scored sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian), who had walked to leadoff the first inning with the first run.
In the decisive six-run third inning DiReda and senior outfielder STEVE SCANNELL (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) each contributed two-run singles. DiReda added a two-run double in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.
In the second game junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) singled across a run in the third and Foley doubled in another in the fourth inning. A pair of wild pitches made it a 4-0 advantage in the top of the fourth. An RBI single by Scannell and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) plated the final runs in the fifth.
The Greyhounds are now 21-13-1 overall and 13-6-1 in the conference (remaining in second place behind Franklin Pierce at 14-5, while Merrimack is 14-20 overall and 5-14 in the conference.
