Greyhound baseball splits Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, NH --- Freshman righthander FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) and junior lefthander ANDREW QUINN (Taunton, MA/Coyle Cassidy) combined to pitch Assumption College past Saint Anselm College, 6-3, in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader here SATURDAY.
In the second game, the Hawks scored three times in the 10th inning to win, 5-2. Senior shortstop BEN GUNN (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard) led the Hawks with four hits, while sophomore leftfielder JOSH DUFRESNE (Auburn, MA/Auburn) had two hits for the Greyhounds.
Junior designated hitter MATTHEW JOSE (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) led the first-game offense with three hits, while senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) added two more hits to improve his career total to 212---just two behind Brendan Klaes '00 for fourth place on the Greyhounds all-time list.
Jose singled across a run to tie the game, 1-1, in the second inning and junior centerfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) hammered a two-run home run in the third inning to make it 3-1.
They scored two more in the sixth inning as freshman catcher EDDIE MC DONALD (Arlington, MA/Arlington Catholic) doubled in one run and sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) singled in the other. Freshman rightfielder MIKE FOLEY (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) singled across the final run in the ninth.
Flynn (3-0) worked six strong innings scattering nine hits with three strikeouts, while Quinn slammed the door with one-hit shutout relief with two strikeouts for his first save of the season.
In game two, Migrants doubled across one run and Foley plated the second with an infielder grounder in the fourth inning. Junior catcher ERIC BACA (Franklin, NH/Franklin) singled across two runs in the three-run 10th inning for Saint Anselm.
The Greyhounds are now 11-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference, while Saint Anselm is 7-11 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Assumption hosts Saint Anselm SUNDAY in a non-conference doubleheader at Rocheleau Field at 12 noon.
