WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore righthander JOE MARTINI (Arlington, MA/Arlington) allowed just four hits over eight innings to improve his record to 3-1 while pitching Assumption College past American International College, 7-2, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball TUESDAY at Rocheleau Field.
The win coupled with Bentley University's 9-5 win over Southern Connecticut State University moved the Greyhounds into second-place in the conference standings. The Greyhounds are now 25-16-1 overall and 17-8-1 in the conference, while Southern Connecticut is now 17-9 in conference play. The win also assured the Greyhounds of one of the six postseason tournament berths. American International is now 8-29 overall and 6-19 in the conference.
Freshman third baseman TYLER MC ELMAN (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro) hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead and their only offense of the game.
Sophomore shortstop SHAWN FRIGON (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) singled across the first Greyhound run in the third and senior second baseman MIKE BAILLARGEON (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) hammered a two-run home run, his 10th of the season, to put Assumption in front to stay, 3-2. Senior third baseman MIKE DI REDA (Shrewsbury, MA/Saint John's) hit his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning to make it 4-2.
Junior first baseman TIM SCAFIDI (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) on a and freshman designated hitter FRANK FLYNN (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) each had RBI singles added to the lead in the sixth inning. Scafidi's sacrifice fly in the seventh finished the scoring.
Flynn and junior outfielder DEREK MIGRANTS (Ayer, MA/Ayer) each had two hits for the Greyhounds, while sophomore designated hitter DILLON FONTAINE (Amenia, NY/Hotchkiss) had two hits for the Jackets.
Assumption hosts Saint Anselm College WEDNESDAY at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
