ASSUMPTION 2, SAINT ANSELM 1
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore forward MEGHAN CIENAVA (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate) scored two goals in a three-minute span in the first half as Assumption College defeated Saint Anselm College in a hard-fought Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer game here SATURDAY. The victory evened the Greyhounds overall record at 2-2-1 and also their conference record at 1-1-0. Saint Anselm is now 3-3-0 overall and also 1-1-0 in the conference. The first goal of the game, and the game-winner, came on nice individual effort by Cienava as the Greyhounds pressed in the Hawk zone. Cienava collected the ball off a defender walked in and beat Saint Anselm freshman goalkeeper Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, MA/Braintree) high to left side at 12:02. Moments later it was encore time as Cienava with a nice high arcing shot over the goalie from 15-20 yards in front made it 2-0 at 14:22. Freshman forward KRISTINA GILLEN was credited with the assist that sent Cienava in on the keeper. At 39:54 of the half Saint Anselm's junior/captain defender Kathleen Kennerley (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) scored her second goal of the season off a rebound in front of Hound senior/captain keeper LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett). In net Matysiak, now 37-17 in her brilliant career, made nine saves, while Cooney made four for the Hawks. Saint Anselm had an edge in shots, 15-8, and in corner kicks, 4-3. The Greyhounds are at Franklin Pierce University TUESDAY at 7 p.m. in Northeast-10 Conference action, while Saint Anselm hosts conference rival Southern New Hampshire University WEDNESDAY at 4 p.m.
