Gillen, Matysiak lead women's soccer past Bentley, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward KRISTINA GILLEN (Carver, MA/Carver) scored the lone goal and senior goalkeeper LAUREN MATYSIAK (Holden, MA/Wachusett) posted the shutout as the Assumption College women's soccer team defeated Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley College, 1-0, in the Multi-Sport Stadium MONDAY night.

The Greyhounds improved to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3 in the conference and handed the Falcons their first conference loss of the season, dropping Bentley to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1.

Gillen scored her second goal of the season in the 77th minute to break a scoreless tie. Junior defender ELISE HENNRIKUS (Fresno, CA/Clovis West) kicked a pass into the box from the far right and Gillen headed it into the upper right corner.

Matysiak was outstanding in goal, stopping both shots she faced for the Greyhounds. Bentley freshman Kara Smith (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) made three saves at the other end. The Greyhounds had an 8-7 edge in shots in a defensive battle.

Matysiak extended her Assumption College record to 29 career shutouts with her 38th career win.

Assumption College will host the University of Massachusetts Lowell WEDNESDAY at 7 p.m., while the Falcons host Saint Anselm, also WEDNESDAY, at 3:30 p.m.
