Second half rally lifts women's basketball past Upper Iowa at Disney ClassicNovember 3, 2007

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --- Assumption College used tenacious full court pressure and an overpowering inside game in the second half en route to a 69-61 win over Upper Iowa University in the second round of the Disney Classic here SATURDAY. Senior center MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) scored 11 of her team-high 15 points to lead five Greyhounds (1-1) in double figures. Urban scored 12 points off-the-bench in the Hounds' opener. Also in double-figures for the Greyhounds were freshman forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) (13 points), junior guard BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) (12 points), sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (11 points) and senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) (10 points). Floyd inched closer to two individual career goals: she now has 998 points and 827 rebounds in a bid to become the fourth Greyhound to reach both plateaus. Sophomore guard ANDREA DOWNS (Chicago, IL/Harlan Academy) and senior forward CHELSEA PETERSEN (Oxford Jct., IA/Midland Community) each scored a team-high 16 points to lead Upper Iowa (0-2). Downs shot 5-of-7 from three-point territory, while Peterson added 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season and junior guard SARA BEST (Brayton, IA/Audubon) contributed with 15 points for the Peacocks. The Greyhounds moved to a quick 11-8 lead as Parker converted a steal into a layup and eventual three-point play with 14:35 left in the first half. Upper Iowa then ran off a 9-0 spurt to move into a six-point advantage at 17 11 . . . a three-pointer and then two free throws by sophomore forward PAIGE DEVINE (St. Charles, MN/St. Charles), a layin off a steal by freshman forward ALLIE NOTHUM (Washington, MO/Washington) and finally two free throws by Peterson. Griffiths hit a jumper with 35 seconds left to bring the Greyhounds to within 10 points, 34-24, at the half. Assumption started the second half scoring 16 of the first 21 points to take their first lead of the game since the 16:35 mark of the first half (11-8). After Floyd tied the game at 54-54 on an offensive rebound and putback with 6:58 remaining, the Greyhounds outscored the Peacocks 15-7 the remainder of the game. Griffiths and Urban started the rally with a pair of free throws each and then Plasski made steal at midcourt and soled for a layin and a 60-54 advantage. Peterson then scored on a wing jumper before Urban cashed a corner jumper for three points. An offensive rebound by Plasski and follow up layup by Griffiths; two foul shots by Floyd and finally a turnaround by Urban had the Greyhounds in command 69-59. The Greyhounds will conclude their three-game series SUNDAY playing against Lander, SC College. The game will be webcast by WZLA (92.9) available from the Lander College athletics website.
