Charde Floyd joins 1,000-rebound club as Greyhounds women's basketball topples UMass Lowell, 87-58, to move into first-place tie in NE-10!January 12, 2008
ASSUMPTION 87, UMASS LOWELL 58 Greyhounds Win Team Record EIGHTH Straight Move into FIRST PLACE tie in the Northeast-10 Conference
LOWELL, Mass. -- Freshman MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) and junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) combined for 39 points and shot an amazing 16-for-19 from the floor as Assumption College women's basketball set a team-mark for most consecutive victories with their eighth straight en route to a convincing 87-58 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Lowell WEDNESDAY at the Costello Gym. The Greyhounds, winners of 11 of their last 12 games, are now 15-3 overall and 9-2, in the Northeast-10 Conference standings. UMass Lowell is now 8-8 and 3-8. Combined with Stonehill College's 49-46 defeat at the hands of American International College WEDNESDAY, the Greyhounds are now tied for first-place in the conference as both with 9-2 records. The Greyhounds stormed to a 53-25 halftime lead shooting a torrid .704 from the floor, making 19-of-27 attempts including five-of-six from three-point territory. Assumption outscored the hosts 31-7 over the final 10 minutes of the period. Griffiths was perfect for the Greyhounds making all seven of her floor attempts with a pair of three-pointers en route to 16 points, while Plasski made five-of-six and ended with 15 points. Defensively, the Greyhounds limited the River Hawks to .300 from the floor as they made just nine-of-30 shots. The 53 points in the half tied the team record for most points scored. They had previously scored 53 points vs. Franklin Pierce (11-23-99) and at Saint Michael's (2-9-00). Senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) became the fourth Greyhound to reach both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career with her seventh rebound of the game at the 6:47 mark of the second half. She joins Lisa McCarthy '83, Ann McInerney '89 and Jen Harrington '94 in the exclusive listing. She needs seven more rebounds to become the second with four 200-rebound seasons joining McCarthy. In addition, junior point guard TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) tied a personal high with nine assists. For the game, the Greyhounds shot a season-high .633 from the floor (31-for-49) and made seven-of-11 from three-point territory. Defensively, they held UMass Lowell to 21-for-60 from the floor, just .350 and a woeful 1-for-19 from three-point territory. The 18 missed threes by a Hounds' opponent is also a team-game record. Griffiths finished with a season- and career-high 20 points (9-for-10 from the floor), while Plasski ended with 19 points---just 10 points short of the 900 career mark. Sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) ended with 12 points, all in the first half. MEGAN BERRY led UMass Lowell with nine points. The Greyhounds host defending national champion Southern Connecticut State University SATURDAY at 1:30 p.m. at the Laska Gym.
