SAN DIEGO, California --- Junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) scored 25 points and added a career-high 10 steals and sophomore guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) added a season- and career-high 23 points as the Assumption College women's basketball team rambled past the University of New Haven, 76-55, in the Surf and Slam Tournament FRIDAY at San Diego City College's Harry West Gym.
The Greyhounds, now 9-3 overall, received 12 votes in the latest USA Today/ESPN national poll (which would place them 30th overall). They have won five of their last six games. New Haven, which is 5-0 and tied for first place in the East Coast Conference, is now 5-4 overall. The Chargers will be joining the Northeast-10 Conference next year. The Greyhounds moved to a 35-30 halftime advantage as Plasski and Lupien each scored 13 points. A layup by New Haven's junior guard LAURIN HOOD (Ashland, MA/Ashland) tied the game at 21-21 with 8:35 left in the first half. The Greyhounds then sprinted 14-9 to the halftime break and opened the second half with an 11-0 burst to build a 16-point lead, 46-30, with 16:40 remaining. Plasski drilled a long three-pointer and then Hood responded with another drive to the basket to make it 24-23 Greyhounds. A jumper by Lupien and two free throws by New Haven junior guard BRIIANA RENDE (Augusta, ME/Cony) . . . another jumper by Lupien on a feed from junior point TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) and ensuing free throw and a three-pointer by Rende made it 29-28. Plasski then scored on a layin on a feed from senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy), senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) on an assist from sophomore guard JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson) and then the Plasski from Floyd duo connected again for a 35-28 advantage. Two free throws by freshman guard DOMINIQUE STELLMACHER (New Britain, CT/New Britain) accounted for the halftime score. Freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) opened the second-half spurt with a baseline jumper and Floyd converted a steal with a drive to the basket. A three-pointer by Plasski from Gardner, two free throws by Floyd and a layin by Plasski had the Greyhounds in command, 46 30. Floyd played well in a support role for the Greyhounds finishing with her 27th career double-double, 14 points, 12 rebounds. She now has 935 career rebounds (fourth on the Greyhounds' career list) and 1,081 career points (12th).
