ASSUMPTION 62, MERRIMACK 51

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds (11 on the defensive board) as women's basketball defeated Merrimack College, 62-51, in a Northeast-10 Conference game WEDNESDAY at the Laska Gym.

The victory moved the Greyhounds into the 20-win category for fourth time in this decade with a 20-5 overall mark. They have won their last four straight and 13 of their last 15 and are 10-1 in the friendly confines of the Laska Gym.

The team, tied with Franklin Pierce University for second-place in the conference with a 14-4 record, will host first-place Stonehill College (15-3) Saturday as part of Winter Homecoming festivities. The victory also assured the team of a first-round bye in the upcoming conference playoffs.

Senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) contributed seven points and career highs in rebounds (11) and blocked shots (4) off-the-bench.

Once again the Greyhounds' defense proved the difference as for the 14th time this season they have held an opponent under .400 for a game.

The Hounds moved to a 33-27 halftime advantage as Griffiths (10 points) and junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) (9 points) paced the offense. Plasski finished with 14 points and is now just 12 points short of the magic 1,000-point mark for her career.

Plasski's three-pointer with 4:18 left in the period lifted the Greyhounds to their largest lead of the half, 12 points, at 32-20.

Merrimack junior guard AMANDA SHANNON (North Andover, MA/North Andover) (team-high 15 points) drilled a three-pointer with 10:46 left to cut the lead to 46-41. At this point, the Greyhounds went on an 10-2 mini-spurt to put it away.

Plasski made a three-pointer on a feed from TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth), sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (12 points) made two free throws, Griffiths canned a lane jumper and a rebound basket and free throw to make it 56-43. Merrimack senior guard TAREKA FAISON (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) scored the only points for the Warriors during the spurt.

Two free throws by Plasski with 1:47 left gave the Greyhounds their largest lead at 15 points, 60-45.
