Greyhound women's hoop rolls past LeMoyne, 64-48, in Northeast-10 Conference action for fifth straight winJanuary 5, 2008
ASSUMPTION 64, LE MOYNE 48
SYRACUSE, NY --- Junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee), senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) and sophomore guard LESLIE LUPIEN (Pomfret Center, CT/Woodstock Academy) combined for 44 points, 22 rebounds and seven steals as Assumption College women basketball defeated Le Moyne College, 64-48, in Northeast-10 Conference action SATURDAY at Ted Grant Court. Plasski, the sixth-leading scorer in the conference, scored 18 points, while Floyd contributed 13 points and 15 rebounds (14 on the defensive glass) for her 28th career (fifth this season) double-double as the Greyhounds sped to a 33-26 halftime lead and won going away. Assumption, now 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference, has now won eight of its last nine games (six straight). Floyd, the leading rebounder in the conference (10.8 per game), now has 973 career rebounds. Lupien was perfect, making four shots from the floor, making her only three-point attempt and all four of her free throws. Le Moyne is 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Le Moyne's freshman forward BRANDY WANGELIN (Olean, NY/Olean) connected on a corner three-pointer with 5:36 left in the half to give the host Dolphins a 24-21 lead. The Greyhounds however outscored Le Moyne 12-2 to the halftime break. A three-pointer by freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) tied the game to start the mini-spurt. Floyd made the second of a two-shot free throw opportunity and Plasski scored a layin off the fastbreak on a feed from Griffiths. Le Moyne junior guard KATHERINE GLADSTONE (Cleveland, OH/Walsh Jesuit) scored off a layin after a steal by sophomore COURTNEY CORYEA (Mooers Forks, NY/Northeast Clinton) to cut the gap to 27-26. The Greyhounds then scored the final six points as Floyd converted an inside move, Griffiths made a lane jumper and senior forward MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) scored on a move inside off a steal by Floyd and a feed from junior point TRICIE GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Darmouth). Gardner led the Greyhounds with seven assists. Le Moyne would cut the gap to four points, 45-41, as Coryea connected on a lane jumper with 8:05 remaining. The Greyhounds then outscored the Dolphins, 19-7, to finish with a 16-point advantage. Sophomore guard JACKIE BRANCA (Hanson, MA/Hanson-Whitman) buried a long straightaway three-pointer and senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) scored on a layin to make it 50-41. Coryea made the second of a two-shot free throw opportunity for Le Moyne before Floyd converted an inside move off her own steal. The Dolphins' Gladstone then hit a jumper before Plasski made a jumper from the right wing and added two free throws for a 56-44 lead. Gladstone interrupted the Greyhounds' uprising with a lane jumper before Lupien made two free throws and Floyd converted an offensive rebound for a 16-point lead. The Dolphins' Coryea and the Hounds' Czanecki swapped jumpers to account for the final. Gladstone (9 rebounds) and Coryea led the Dolphins with 13 points each, while postgraduate guard JACQUELIN PRECIOUS (Ontario, Canada) chipped in 10 points. The Greyhounds are next in action at Bryant University in Northeast-10 Conference action TUESDAY at 5:30 p.m.
