Molly Griffiths leads Greyhounds past Lander (84-71) in Disney Classic; Charde Floyd joins 1,000 point club!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --- Freshman forward MOLLY GRIFFITHS (PICTURED RIGHT) (Walpole, MA/Ursuline Academy) scored a game-high 18 points to pace a balanced offense of six double-figure scorers as Assumption College defeated Lander (Greenwood, SC) College, 84-71, SUNDAY in the Disney Classic.

Griffiths scored 13 of her team-high 18 points in the first half to lead six Assumption players in double figures. She shot seven-for-11 from the floor and was named to the All-Tournament Team in Group Intensity after averaging 14.0 points and 5.3 rebounds for the three games.

And, when senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) did her patented spin move on the block with 14:35 left in the first half the Greyhounds led 16-8 and she become the 16th Greyhound to reach the coveted 1,000-point plateau.

Floyd finished with 10 points, 14 rebounds, her 25th career double-double and her second in this tournament. She now has 841 career rebounds needs 159 to become the fourth to reach both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She had 34 rebounds for the tournament, two shy of the tournament record.

Junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists for the Greyhounds (2-1). Senior forward MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) and sophomore guard MAEGAN COOK (Braintree, MA/Braintree) both came off-the-bench to score 12 and 11 points, respectively. Junior point TRISH GARDNER (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) contributed 10 points and eight assists.

Senior forward TIARA GOOD (Jonesville, SC/Jonesville), a Wake Forest transfer, led the Bearcats (1-2) with 18 points (13 in the second half), shooting five of-15 from the floor and four-of-12 from three-point territory. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team for Group Intensity after averaging 20.7 points for the three games. Junior guard LASHONDA CHILES (Greenwood, SC/Grenwood), a transfer from Anderson College, was the only other Lander player to score in double figures with 12 points.

The Greyhounds came out flying scoring the first 11 points of the game and holding the Bearcats scoreless until junior center STEPHANIE PONDS (Bethune, SC/Bethune) first of two free throw attempts at the 17:23 mark. Lander went on a 12-5 run to trim the lead to four points (16-12).

Plasski drilled a long-range three-pointer just four seconds into the game and then Gardner and Griffiths connected from outside the arc before Griffiths added a conventional wing jumper to make it 11-0 with 17:53 left. The Hounds made nine three-pointers in the game, just two short of their team record, while Lander made 11-of-23, just two short of the Hounds opponent record.

Assumption then outscored the Bearcats 29-14 for the rest of the half to take a 19-point lead, 45-26. Lander was held to 7-of-30 shooting from the field (23.3 percent field goal accuracy) for the first half compared to 46.2 percent (18-for-39) for Assumption.

Then the Greyhounds scored 16 of the first 22 points of the second half to extend the lead to 29 points (61-32) at the 14:26 mark. The Bearcats chipped away at the Assumption lead to get within nine points (78-69), led by Good's 13 points, with a minute left.

Assumption, now 2-1, is off until they host the Courtyard Classic Mixer November 16-17. The Greyhounds will play East Coast Conference opponents Molloy and Concordia.
