March 15, 2008

PHILADELPHIA- Junior guard Bethany Plasski had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists, leading the Assumption College women's basketball team to a 67-58 victory over Bentley in a NCAA Division 2 Northeast Regional quarterfinal at Holy Family University's Campus Center last night.

Sophomore forward Kayla Parker had 15 points and eight rebounds for the fifth-seeded Greyhounds (22-9), who will take on top-seeded Holy Family (30-0) in a regional semifinal at 8 tonight at the Campus Center. Holy Family is ranked fourth in the nation.

The Greyhounds were the only lower seed to win their Northeast Regional quarterfinal. Second-seeded Stonehill will face third-seeded Franklin Pierce in tonight's other semifinal, with the winners meeting in the final on Monday.

Assumption set a program record with its 22nd win, while Bentley's run of 20-win seasons ended. The fourth-seeded Falcons (19-11) failed to win 20 for the first time in coach Barbara Stevens' tenure in Waltham. Stevens, a Southbridge native, had led Bentley to 24 straight 20-win seasons.

The Greyhounds won their NCAA opener without the services of injured senior captain Charde Floyd, the team's leading rebounder and fourth-leading scorer. They completed a three-game sweep over the Falcons for the season.

Over the final 10:45, the Greyhounds overcame a six-point deficit, outscoring the Falcons, 32-17.

Assumption was outrebounded by Bentley, 46-43, and on the offensive boards, 16-8. But the Greyhound defense made things tough on the Falcons, limiting them to 30.9 percent from the field (21 of 68), 14.3 percent (3 of 21) from 3-point range. Bentley was 0 for 11 from behind the arc in the second half.

Junior guard Trish Gardner had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for Assumption, which tried only six 3-point goals, hitting two.

Sophomore guard Leslie Lupien was impressive off the bench for the Hounds, hitting 5 of 7 from the field and finishing with 11 points in 23 minutes.

The game was tied, 28-28, at halftime, before Assumption's defense clamped down. The Greyhounds held the Falcons to 27.5 percent from the field in the second half (11 of 40).

Assumption was effective drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line. The Hounds connected on 21 of 32 for the night (65.6 percent), hitting on 19 of 26 in the second half, including seven of their last eight to finish off the Falcons.

Ashley Bruton, Vanessa Lux and Elise Caira each scored 11 points for the Falcons. While finding their way to the line, the Greyhounds got Erica Kirwan (8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) and Kristy McLean (6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals) to foul out.
