Kayla Parker, Megan Urban, Bethany Plasski lead Greyhound women's basketball past Bentley, 59-58, to tie team-record for wins (21)!February 19, 2008
ASSUMPTION 59, BENTLEY 58
WALTHAM, Mass. --- In a night of historic facts Assumption College women's basketball defeated Bentley College, 59-58, TUESDAY night at the Dana Center. The win marked the first for the Greyhound women in Waltham since the very first meeting between the two teams in 1974-75 . . . the Hounds winning that game, 70-42 . . . 31 games ago. It was also the first time that the Greyhounds have swept the regular-season series---having won 75-64 in Worcester (12/01/2007).
The win denied the Falcons a piece-of-history losing in their 1,000th game and denying the home team its 800th victory. Bentley basketball will seek the now elusive 800th Saturday at Saint Michael's. And, finally, the Greyhounds are now 21-6 overall---tying the team record for most wins in a season---previously set with a 21-9 record in 2003-04. They improved to 15-5 in conference play, clinching at least third-place and trailing only Stonehill (17-3) and Franklin Pierce (16-4) with two games remaining. They will host Southern New Hampshire Saturday and play at Pace next Tuesday. Sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford), senior forward MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) (8 rebounds) and junior guard/captain BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) shared scoring honors for the Greyhounds with 14 points each. The Greyhounds shot just .346 from the floor making just 18-of-52 shots (one of seven from three-point territory) however held a decided advantage at the free throw line making 22-of-27 to the Falcons nine-of-15. Parker made four straight free throws and Plasski two in the fianl minute as the Hounds rallied from a four-point deficit, 51-47, with 3:25 left to win. Parker connected on a runner in the lane and Griffiths drilled a wing jumper to tie the game at 51-51 with 2:14 left. After Falcons' senior center VANESSA LUX (Arundel, ME/Catherine McAuley) (15 points) made the second of two free throws, Parker made two of her own to put the Hounds in front, 53-52, with 1:44 remaining. Bentley however came right back as freshman guard ELISE CAIRA (Wakefield, MA/Arlington Catholic) made a driving layup to put the Falcons up, 54-53. Two free throws by Parker and then two more by Urban gave the Hounds a three-point cushion, 57-54, with 51 seconds left. Junior guard KRISTY MC LEAN (Staten Island, NY/Poly Prep), the Falcons' leading scorer with 19 points, hit a lane jumper however Plasski countered with a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left. McLean made a layup with four seconds left to account for the final. CLICK HERE FOR SCORING SUMMARY |
