ASSUMPTION 72, MERRIMACK 59

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. --- Junior guard BETHANY PLASSKI (Fall River, MA/Durfee) scored 18 points to lead four double-figure scorers as Assumption College defeated Merrimack College, 72-59, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action THURSDAY night at Volpe Center.

The Greyhounds, who received votes in the USAToday/ESPN/WBCA national poll this past week, are now 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. The Greyhounds received 31 votes which would have them at No. 32. Merrimack falls to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Playing well in support roles for the Greyhounds were sophomore forward KAYLA PARKER (Sanford, ME/Sanford) (12 points), senior center MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME/Deering) (11 points, 3 blocks) and freshman guard MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA/Ursuline) (10 points). Senior forward/captain CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) finished with seven points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. She now has 923 rebounds in her bid to become the fourth Greyhound to join the 1,000-rebound club.

Sophomore guard CASEY MILLER (Fairbanks, AK/West Valley) led the Warriors with 13 points.

The Greyhounds sped to a 39-27 halftime advantage as their stingy defense limited the usually sharpshooting Warriors to just 29 percent, making merely nine of 31 shots from the floor. Parker led the individual scoring with all 12 of her points.

Junior guard AMANDA SHANNON (North Andover, MA/North Andover) converted the second of two free throws with 11:11 left to cut the Assumption early lead to 13-10. The Greyhounds then spurted 10-4 to assume control, 23-14.

Griffiths started the rally with a wing jumper before Merrimack's junior guard GATELY GOLDEN (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) scored on a layin. The Hounds' Parker and Plasski each hit both ends of two-shot foul opportunities for a 19-12 lead.

Merrimack senior guard TAYEYA FAISON (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) made jumper in the paint before the Hounds senior forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) and Urban countered with inside moves for a 23-14 advantage.

Merrimack's freshman guard SARAH BENISCHEK (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland) hit a pair of free throws with 7:58 remaining in the second half as the Warriors cut the gap to three, 53-50, completing a 23-14 run after the break. Assumption however outscored Merrimack 19-9 to win going away.

The Greyhounds are next in action December 28-29 in the San Diego Surf N Slam when they play New Haven and Slippery Rock.
