Haller, Costin and Strand key volleyball past Southern Connecticut, 3-1, in NE-10 matchOctober 5, 2007
ASSUMPTION 3, SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT 1
NEW HAVEN, Conn. --- Sophomore outside hitter JESSICA HALLER (Meriden, CT/Maloney) and junior outside hitter JENNA COSTIN (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield) each had a career-high 20 kills as Assumption College escaped Southern Connecticut, 3-1, in a grueling Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball match FRIDAY at the Pelz Gymnasium. The Greyhounds, in a push for their first postseason appearance since 2001, are now 11-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Southern Connecticut is now 9-15 and 2-6. Assumption prevailed 30-26, 30-28, 29 31 and 30-26 in the four-game match. While Costin and Haller were leading the offense, freshman setter MARILISA STRAND (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) was at her best with 57 set assists. Senior captain/libero LAUREN RASWYCK (Litchfield, NH/Campbell) ended with 38 digs and now has 1,768 for her career just 52 short of Annie LeClerc's (1998-2001) career mark of 1,820. The Greyhounds host conference rivals Massachusetts Lowell (Tuesday) and Saint Michael's (Saturday) in their next two matches giving Raswyck an excellent opportunity to break the record at home. Haller was particularly effective in the deciding fourth game with nine kills and a hitting percentage of .400, while Strand added 22 assists. Junior middle blocker NEKANI MENDIZABAL (Stratford, CT/Stratford) led the Owls with 19 kills and a .318 hitting percentage, while junior setter ASHLEY COOMBS (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) added 20 assists and 17 digs.
