WORCESTER, Mass. --- Senior righthander LAUREN SYMONICK (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) scattered eight hits while pitching Assumption College softball past Southern Connecticut, 4-3, in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader MONDAY at Marois Field.
In the opener the Greyhounds erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning en route to an 11-3 ‘mercy rule' win.
The Hounds took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings, allowed Southern Connecticut to tie it with singles runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, and then pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman outfielder BERNADETTE FUENTES (Hicksville, NY/Holy Trinity) opened with a single down the leftfield line and freshman first baseman AMY GORDON (Seekonk, MA/Bishop Feehan) sacrificed her into scoring position. Sophomore outfielder MEGHAN DIVITTO (Milford, MA/Milford) then reached on an infield roller to load the bases. Senior catcher AMANDA MONGE (Reading, MA/Central Catholic) then drilled the game-winning RBI single to centerfield.
DiVitto, Monge and Fuentes each had two hits to pace the Greyhounds' 10-hit attack.
For the Owls sophomore outfielder JULIANNE FLOOD (Poughquad, NY/Arlington) had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, junior outfielder MONICA SAVARESE (Orange, CT/Amity) had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and freshman ROBIN PRIEST (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) singled across a run in the seventh inning.
In the opener, Southern Connecticut scored early as Savarese, junior third baseman CHRISTINA WOLF (Newtown, CT/Newtown) and junior shortstop AMANDA ST. GEORGE (Shelton, CT/Shelton) accounted for RBIs in the first inning.
The Hounds scored in the second inning on a wild pitch and in the third inning on an error before exploding for a season-high eight runs in the fourth inning.
Sophomore outfielder ERIN MURPHY (Sarasota, FLCardinal Mooney) opened the inning with a walk and junior second baseman MELISSA BOWMAN (West Hartford, CT/Conard) followed with a single to left before Gordon walked to load the bases.
DiVitto then stroked a two-run double down the leftfield line and Monge followed with a two-run single. Freshman shortstop MARISSA PALUMBO (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) then doubled to the gap in leftcenter and senior designated hitter KORINA SALAFIA (Leominster, MA/Leominster) walked to reload the bases.
Freshman third baseman ASHLEY BILODEAU (Manchester, CT/East Catholic) stroked a two-run double followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Murphy and Bowman to make it 10-3.
The Hounds made it an eight-run lead (mercy rule) with an infield roller to shortstop (RBI) by Palumbo in the fifth inning.
Junior righthander HEATHER BROTHERS (Worcester, MA/St. Peter Marian) won her second game with relief help from sophomore righty MEGAN ORBON (Levittown, NY/MacArthur).
DiVitto, Monge, Bilodeau and Bowman each had two hits to pace the Greyhounds' 12-hit attack, while Lee, first baseman BRITTANY GANDLY (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) and Wolfe had two hits each for the Owls.
Assumption is now 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference and plays at Merrimack College WEDNESDAY at 3 p.m. in another Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. Southern Connecticut falls to 9-19 and 2-5.
