Lauren Symonick pitches Greyhound softball past Lake Superior for program win No. 600!March 3, 2008
ASSUMPTION 3, LAKE SUPERIOR 2
OCOEE, Florida --- Senior lefthander LAUREN SYMONICK (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) pitched a six-hitter and senior catcher AMANDA MONGE (Reading, MA/Central Catholic) knocked in the game-winner as Assumption College defeated Lake Superior State, MI, 3-2, in a non-conference softball game here TUESDAY at the West Orange Girl's Club facility. The win gives the Greyhounds softball program an even 600 wins since the inception of the sport in 1976. Its overall record is now 600-487. It is beleived, as records are not accurate at all institutions, that the Greyhounds are the third member of the Northeast-10 Conference to reach the 600 mark behind American International and Merrimack. The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore LACEY KNOOP (Reed City, MI/Reed City) drew a walk and eventually came around to score on a groundball single to left by senior APRIL BRANDT (White Cloud, MI/Macomb). The Greyhounds then came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning as freshman outfielder BERNADETTE FUENTES (Hicksville, NY/Holy Trinity) executed the suicide squeeze to perfection scoring sophomore outfielder MEGHAN DIVITTO (Milford, MA/Milford), while freshman outfielder MARY HANCOCK (Gardner, MA/Gardner) also came across on an errant throw. The game-winner came in the third inning as Monge singled across freshman designated hitter ASHLEY BILODEAU (Manchester, CT/East Catholic), who had reached on an error and been sacrificed into scoring position by freshman shortstop MARISSA PALUMBO (Worcester, MA/Holy Name). Symonick retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced to gain her first win of the season with just 98 pitches. The Lakers' senior righthander STEPHANIE REVELEY (St. Clair Shores, MI/Lake Shore) pitched a tough luck four-hitter and allowed three unearned runs. The Greyhounds are now 1-3 on their Florida trip and play a doubleheader with Winona State, MN Thursday in Ocoee.
